A while back I bought a retractable dog leash with a 25 foot cord.  When I walk the dog, with this kind of leash, it reminds me of fishing.  The dog pulls line out to a point and then I have to reel him in.  Sometimes he wraps the leash around a tree and it reminds me of a bass that has gone under a log.  Don’t pull too hard or it just pins the poor dog against the tree.  If you don’t have one of these leashes yet you may want to get one so you can think about fishing when you’re walking the dog!  I have a poodle so I compare walking him to catching a bass...or blue gill :smt003  Some of you may have dogs that are more exciting to walk like salmon, tarpon...sharks?
Three-fourths of the Earth's surface is water, and one-fourth is land. It is quite clear that the good Lord intended us to spend triple the amount of time fishing as taking care of the lawn.

I use one of those for my anchor line, works great no loose rope.

I prefer to use a more traditional "hand line" type of leash :smt001.

I did once use my salmon net to rescue my cat off the roof though. She acted about the way a halibut or a lingcod would :smt005

I tried using an old leash as a downrigger about 10yrs ago. The one I tried wasn’t strong enough to retrieve a 3lb cannonball but it could bring up 1.5lbs pretty fast! It was easier to deploy too.

That’s a pretty great idea. Is it saltwater resistant?

Well 4 me..., dangling a piece of molten glass on the end of a 5' stainless steel pipe, is a lot like angling for a live fish.

The little dog leashes work great as a paddle leash  :smt003

TLW’s Rottweiler = Great white, pulls like a tractor hang on tight and hope it ends well!
My Dachshund = lingcod, fast action and great head shakes pulls the line for a couple good runs.    :smt044

Doubt it I only use in FW, another nice thing is you can pull the anchor 1 handed.

Looks like it might be possible to DIY one with a stainless spring...
