Ha! I kept checking back to see if you went fishing yesterday. Looks pretty flat in the first pic. I should've skipped work.
Are you fishing this wknd? I haven't got permission to camp at Kirk Creek yet so I might just fish Monastery again.

Nice pics,

Here is the quick story.  While the launch was easy, there were breakers on either side and moderate frequent sells and breakers outside.  It was so foggy I could not see the shore once I got to about 35 ft depth of water.  I tried to stay inside to avoid boat traffic but the sounds of breakers in the 50 -100 foot visability was uncomfortable at best.  I ended up drifting out and toward the point and more breakers.  After a while in the confused swell and not so great fishing, I decided to head back to where I had some fish but which way?  I pulled out the GPS and got my bearings but it was still pea soup and the mixed frequent swell began to upset my stomach.  When I finally spotted land, I could not tell if it was my launch or not.  I ended up searching the shore in variable fog until it cleared enough to identify my launch spot and land.  I caught the three RF that I kept plus a few small gophers and one grass RF plus one 20-inch underling.  The fishing was difficult in the steep and frequent swells and it never turned out to be the day I was hoping for.  None the less a day fishing is always better than a day working.

Next time I launch in such fog, I will turn on the GPS before I launch to make sure I make it back to the same spot.  I really never expected the fog to be a problem as I thought it would clear by the time I wanted to head in but the seasick feeling cut my plan short and it was not clear enough to identity the launch so I had to paddle, fish and wait for clear sky in order to land.

Thanks for the report and good fishing.  I'd say it's official though . .the fishing around Pt Pinos is off during a mixed swell.  I've read enough reports and experienced it first hand enough to know now.  Actually I have never done well there except in really nice conditions . .I guess that works out for the best, though . .huh?

Once again . .nice catching of rockfish.  Hope we get a chance to get out together again soon.

I was just thinking the same thing.  Paradise is good to us.........when it is ready to deliver it smiles with bright and inviting sky and an open sea lying gently before us.      ......too bad that doesn't look to be occuring again anytime soon......... :smt009
Saltwater is the cure for everything that ails us,

Yes, it's CRUCIAL to turn on your GPS before launching. One of the best features of a GPS is its ability to get you home in dense fog. Even on clear days, it can be difficult to recognize a launch spot from a distance, unless it has a landmark like a lighthouse.

Etienne -

Nice report. I am envious that you can fish before work. Should have gone into business. I have a running light I use in fog and low light. I am always concerned about being hit by a PB under such conditions, not sure how much it really helps, but it looks cool.
