I was fishing BH a few moons ago. Seeing big archs on my ff. I got hit on my line followed by another hit like a freight train, just run, put pressure on the reel as it feels like gonna smoke. Line just snapped like somebody use scissors to cut my line. Until today still makes me wonder. 😨

I have really been trying to figure out what was happening on the other end of that line.  Was it a nice size ling holed up? Fish wrapped around a rock/seaweed?  Maybe a wolf eel anchored in it's den?  Octopus?
All of the above, all at the same time! Ya just never know.

Sounds like WSB to me. Exactly how they hit and run.

Next time don’t thumb the spool. 😀

If you were fishing SW south, I'd say maybe a giant black seabass.
Octopus is a good guess too. Or large lingcod wrapped around some kelp.

"Big tugs" you experienced usually end up being cabezons for me.  Feels like pulling up concrete, with a few runs/tugs that make your rod go bendo.  Probably a ling or cabezon that took your bait back to its hole and broke off at the rocks... or your line needs a better knot/tie next time?
I agree with you, last time I hooked into something that pulled "differently" at SW. At first I thought I had a snag so I kept pulling and reeling trying to break my "snag" loose with out snapping my line only to notice it was coming up little by little but still pulling down "heavy" like I was reeling in a kelp ball. When my kelp ball came to the top it had a face only a fisherwoman could love! :smt007 Awww, a Cabbie!!! Yummm! Smiles:

I was kayak fishing near SWN yesterday, when I noticed my light rockfish rod in the holder going bendo.

Interesting - do you deploy your gear and set the rod in a holder?

It was just for a minute while I sat still to re-tie my heavier setup.  Figured I could have the light rod jigging in the water while I did that...  Earlier in the day, the same thing got me a nice copper.  Still not sure what I hooked or snagged that time, but it really did feel alive (and strong).

Good strategy! You can’t catch fish if you don’t have a line in the water!

Just keep in mind that you are only allowed to fish one rod at a time for rockfish/lings.

I’ve been fooled a handful of times.... The interaction of swells, currents, kelp, stretchy monofilament, rocks, etc, can REALLY feel fishy on the end of your line when in fact you’re just snagged.
