Sat Salmon at Pt Pinos report

Saw Joel at Fishermans whs on Thursday and he wanted me to post my report here,  even though it's not a kayak report...

Last year I went out for Salmon 3 times on my Montauk and was skunked every time. My buddy Steve did land a 38lber on one of those trips, what a hog.  I go out on April 8 and my buddy Steve lands a 36lber!!  I was skunked again!!  I did loose a nice one that broke off my 30lb flouro due to violent head shakes (by the fish, not me!)   Dang!! 

So I go out last Sat on my buddy Dougs boat armed with 40lb leader and a purple haze hoochie at 100ft and finally get the skunk off!!  It's a 30lber that gave me a work out.  I took it easy but that fish took the longest run I ever had. My spool was getting pretty small!  Thanks to a great crew that cleared the wire and chased down the fish,  we got it in the box!

My other buddy on another boat got limits near us.  They must have been lucky or the three bladed spinning flasher and croc combo really works.  One guy landed 4 of the six fish they caught. Humm...got to buy one of those flashers.  We only caught that one fish and quit at 3:00,  so it was a long day.  I musta taken a 2 hr nap...Salmon trolling is sure boring but that cedar plank Salmon dinner last night made it worth it!!

I have not heard of a three bladed spinning flasher before? What is that?

I got it wrong...I just found out it's called a Fish Flash. Check this website:

I think the got it at Mel Cottons or Coyote Bait.  Fishermans Wharehouse doesn't have them.    I'm going to try it next time!!!

I remember looking at those flashers a couple of seasons ago.  I wonder if the added drag would be manageable on a kayak.

I've seen the fishflashes used around Westport WA and the lower Columbia R. the last few years. I haven't tried them, yet, but they're supposed to have less drag than conventional flashers. There are some other flashers around here with similar geometry, too.

Big thanks for the reply Dave! Those things look promising. Might have to add a few to my growing collection of "salmon-gear-that-I-totally-need-but-will-probably-never-use."
