Anyone have any ideas on where you can buy minnows around Santa Cruz? I would like to try some at Pinto or Calero without driving way out of the way to find them---Thanks, DS

If you going to Calero.  You can get some at Coyote Bait & Tackle in San Jose.  8215 Monterey Rd. 95101  Phone 408-463-0711  www.coyotebait.com

It is about 5 miles away from Calero.

Ya know…there aren't many true tackel/bait shops around here, surprisingly enough. Especially for freshwater. Coyote Bait and Tackle might be the closest place to buy minnows.
HOWEVER…I just happened to be reading the regs for baitfish the other day and noticed something interesting: we can use mosquito fish for bait! Most mosquito fish are reatively small but you can get some in the 3-inch range….certainly big enough to be used as bait. AND (the best part) they are Free! The county gives them away to people who own backyard ponds, water features, etc. And they breed like rabbits! I got 20 (free from the local petshop) for my backyard ponds two summers ago and now I've got about 100 of em!
Just a thought…
