The Big_Tuna gang dawned our new wetsuits and water shoes, tied everything down, double checked our life jackets, turned on our marine radio, checked the weather, tides, and currents and headed out into the big blue! Wow! It is an entirely new world in the bay. After spending the last three years in and around the Gulf, Monterey Bay is like kayaking and fishing on a different planet. My son, who is a fearless swimmer and waterman found his anxiety a little higher than normal as we launched near our home in Pacific Grove. Picking our way around the crashing surf and squeezing through a calm area we approached our first swell. Going up and over this moving hill of water was something I will never forget. Once the swells passed and the water smoothed out, a beautiful sea otter was waiting for us on the kelp as if to say, "welcome to my world, I hope you have a great day!" As we began to try out our new techniques and tackle, my son instantly hauled in two rockfish on his line, I knew this was going to be an amazing place to live and fish! And to top off a great day of fishing, a massive whale came within 25 yards of our kayak. Again, this was quite a welcome party.  :smt007

With nearly all of my anxiety gone, a mess of fish in all kinds of colors, and something so big that it nearly broke my rod, we headed back to the shore. Shooting past the waves and reaching a calm little bay, we jumped off the kayak and laid on the sand! Wow! What an amazing morning of fishing. "That was not so bad."

... and then my son reminded, "Hey, Dad. Don't forget, there are still giant sharks out there!"

See you on the water!
