Hey, I am new to all things kayak, but fish wherever and whenever I can.

My buddy Sledge said to sign up, find a used kayak and get in the water.

I live 5 min. from the Napa river and am limited to shore and dock fishing. I also want to hit some mountain lakes near the family cabin in the sierras and take my crab pots out on Tomales bay.

I am looking for a functional used kayak (I'm not looking to win a beauty contest, just fish) and want something that can be used in mountain lakes, rivers, ocean/bays.
I will also need some sort of rack to bolt up to the Yakima rack system mounted on a truck cap (need a riser to get above the cab) or am limited to taking my (recently unreliable) 4Runner.

Bok, Bok, Bok!

Welcome to the forum!

I have a Tarpon 160 that I'm offloading, but it may be a bit long for rivers, and doesn't have rod holders.  As for racks, I have some J-hooks that I don't need, but what is your current setup?  I've found the most secure way is to strap the kayak straight to the crossbars.

Thanks,

As far as racks, my Tundra has a cap with a Yakima rack bolted to it, but is way too low to go over the cab. My 4Runner has a stock rack that should be fine, but I'm having a solenoid issue with the tranny. My friend Mike has his strapped to the top of his cab over camper, he went to the coast last night.

How much for the kayak? I have friends that know what they are doing and will coach me.

Thanks again,

Kevin

If you're running something like this, that's usually enough height for an upside-down kayak.

My second-favorite setup are simple kayak feet with the kayak resting upside-down on them.  You can use them if you need a little height.

Thanks, I guess it's technically a bed cover, Undercover brand. Poses more of a problem.

Hmm, your best option is probably to try to sell your cover and buy a shell.  Depending on the make/model/color it may be relatively easy.  If you go with an option that utilizes the current racks, you'll probably lose access to the bed once you put the kayak on.

You could also install Yakima tracks on the roof of the cab, but the cost of doing it right is probably more than what you would spend swapping to a shell, if anything.

Or get a trailer, or fix the tranny!

This is the easiest solution. Also the easiest to load after fishing all day...because you only have to lift the kayak onto your bed/tailgate.
