Greetings everyone,
I just got a 10 foot tandem kayak (Lifetime Sport Fisher) and mounted a 45 lb motor.  I really love fishing and am targeting rock fish off the coast.

I appreciate having this site for good info and will do what I can to also share with this site.  Cheers.

Such heavy ammunition for 10 ft yak... anyways at least you will get to the fishing spots faster then anyone else, welcome to the forums!

Actually, with the added weight of a battery/motor on a 10' kayak, chances are it would go about the same speed as a say a Hobie Adventure plus he has to deal with the added expense of paying vessel registration on it every 2-years

Agree ... quite a bit of gear for a 10' yak.  Pictures?

I saw tandem with motor at SC 2 weeks ago (maybe it was the same kayak?) It seemed to struggle a bit when wind picked up after noon , even when paddled in parallel. But made it to harbour after while.

Welcome! Motors are great but don't forget to get familliar with paddling techniques for when you batteries inevitably leave you stranded. You'll notice that even the pedal drive folks carry a paddle.

I see you're in livermore; hit me up if you're ever interested in going to Shadow Cliffs or De Valle

Sounds like a very unique setup...
Are you pondering what I’m pondering?

Welcome to the madness...definitely take what others are saying into consideration.  No fish is worth getting into trouble for.

My main question is...if you were to flip that yak with the battery and motor attached, would you be able to flip it back over?  I have seen a guy on a tandem with a motor flip the yak in the ocean and couldn't right it so he sat on it waiting for harbor patrol to come rescue him and his yak.  Whatever you decide, think safety first!

Thanks everyone for the welcome, sorry for the late reply.  I thought this site would notify me of responses, didn't think I had to manually click on posts.  My bad.

I do plan to test my set up in a local lake, and yes, do plan to try to flip her and see how recoverable she is.  I have the utmost respect for the ocean and safety is front of mind.

I got the minn kota riptide 45lb trust.

I think you need a minimum of 10 posts before anything will happen.
