Hey my names Greg. Looking to get some information on trolling salmon from a kayak. This sounds like soo much fun!!! Mainly I want to know what the best yak is for fishing salmon out the gate.

I'm willing to spend a pretty penny on the right unit the first time around. Is the hobie pa 14 the one? Will this be to big and exhausting for salmon trolling?

For trolling, I'd suggest maybe a Revo or Revo 16, as opposed to a PA.

Welcome to the site.  I love my salmon trolling, but I'm a paddler.  See you around the community.   :smt001

It is a lot easier to troll from a Hobie (or other pedal-powered yak, I assume...haven't tried the Native Propel). I would suggest a Hobie Revolution 13, Revolution 16, Adventure, or Outback before suggesting a Pro Angler for salmon out the gate.

I have no experience with pedal powered boats but the PA is a HEAVY ride which can be a cumbersome pain in the ass getting to and from the water. Depending on where you plan to fish, that is definitely something to consider. I have a Jackson big tuna which is also a pig. Loading/unloading and getting it to and from the water is quite the job. I have the big tuna so my son can go out with me so it works for now but when he is old enough to go out by himself I will be looking for a pedal kayak. The PA will likely be out since it is such a beast. Awesome boat but I am done with that.

What other fishing besides trolling for salmon might be most important question.

If not worried about money I have the older Revo 13 and a 2015 Rev 16.

I like the Revo 16 much better, new seat is more comfortable and ease of pedaling plus speed much better. Even though 16 is longer it weighs about the same.

Welcome to the site.  :smt006

It's more than an approach to fish from a kayak, it's kind of a lifestyle, it's definitely a madness.  :smt002

Welcome Greg!

Good suggestions above.  Like Loleta Eric, I am a paddler not a peddler, but for open ocean with no worries of kelp and such, my suggestion is look for the longest , fastest boat with best stability.  Hobie guys can ID their models for you.  Ocean Kayak is the Trident 13/15 or 4.3/4.7; Wilderness is the new Thresher, and Jackson now has the Kraken.

All these traditional paddle boats are excellent balance of stability and speed, with the Ocean Kayaks, of course, being the best (haha).

Try 'em before you buy em' and test them in rough water!
