I am thinking about taking my daughter for her first try in fishing, and am thinking about trying mackerels in Monterey tomorrow if they are still there. I remember seeing a post on this just a few days ago, but just cannot find the post after searching up and down. I do not want to disappoint her on her first try and lose interests in it, and I never fished mackerel before. Does anyone know if the macs are still around Monterey piers? Which pier should I try, fishermen's wharf or the pier next to it? Any particular time is good for mackerels? Thanks in advance!

They are probably still around. You can park right ON wharf 2 if you get lucky and find a spot. Otherwise you can park in the main lot or even at MBK (which is on the beach right next to the wharf). Use size 6 sabikis with tiny bits of squid, or just bare sabikis.

Thanks a lot for the great info. Is there a particular time we should go, or they are not picky in timing?

You just got to go with the flow and ask the locals at the pier. It's on then it'll be off. I took my granddaughter last Friday and she had a blast. Caught 4 the first cast, lost 1 to the sea lion, which added more thrill and fun to the event, then caught 3. And that's from 5-5:45pm which was about 2 hours before high tide. Then it was off till 8.

Hope you and daughter have the same fun we did.

They still there as of yesterday, my son and I were freediving right of the pier and saw a school of them buzz us by.
