I got a used OK Scrambler XT for my daughter. One of the toggle handles pulled through the plastic loop at one end. Anyone know a secure way to repair it? Would I be able to melt the loop closed again? Would it always be more susceptible to tearing through again?

Thanks

I posted a DIY a long time ago. Let me see if I can dig it up.

Same kayak; I thought I would cut out the front hatch and grab a cover but I didn't realize how much those Gaspachi hatch covers cost! Anyone know if there is a cheaper cover that fits that hatch? Or somewhere to get one for less than $80?

Not the same kayak.
Mine was actually the original Tarpon 16 (yes sixteen). There was no 120 or 140 yet.
It did not have the G hatches you have. It had the regular plastic hatch secured with nylon straps.
I don't like the G hatches and was very disappointed when they started using them.
No idea what a decent replacement would be.

I think he meant the hatch question was regarding the same Ocean Kayak Scrambler XT.

Haha, yes that's what I meant Krusty, but Tote all info is good,  for instance I would have guessed this kayak was an older model.

I see other hatch covers that are much cheaper. I tried another cover from an Equinox kayak that looked about the same size but it was a little big. I would have assumed they would all be similar but apparently I got the one that requires the most expensive hatch cover.

I saw a couple diy ideas but one looks like my grandma's bloomers and the other looked like a bunch of trash strapped around the hatch!  I would love to be creative with it but I would rather spend $80 than have the thing fill up with water.

I was wondering if one of the $40 hatches fits the Gaspachi holes but now the whole discussion is making me feel cheap. Maybe I will just order one today.

I also have a Scrambler XT, and  I have faced the same problems you are...

My front handle is still out of commission... I'll check out that DIY.

As for the hatch cover... Call around to some kayak shops and rental spots. I was able to score a used Gaspachi hatch cover for something like $20 from a kayak shop. It came off a rental kayak that they "retired". That was about 12 years ago, and the used hatch cover is still going strong...

This place seems to have a good selection of hatch kits & covers: http://topkayaker.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=18
I've ordered hatches through them a few times. I like how they list measurements for most hatches...flange diameter, hole size, etc.

Cool link. Thanks Cen Coast. They list my rubber hatch kit at $84.95 so same price as Amazon but maybe I could tool around and find another hatch that would fit.

Thanks!

D'oh! Reading comprehension issues...I thought you were looking to install the round center hatch. There aren't many options for that big oval bow hatch :-( Sorry. Best bet is to hit up local rental shops to see if they can hook up a used one for cheap. I'll ask my buddy at MBK today...you never know.

Sorry I forgot about this, but I hit up MBK and they have the standard/newer-style hatch kit for $85 w/10% NCKA discount. And they also had one of the old-style hatch kits for $79 w/30% discount (so like $56). If you call them for more info or visit the shop, ask for Holokai. He knows whats up.
