Screw the local freshwater scene. You should fish for stripers & halibut on the bay side and rockfish & lings on the ocean side. From shore. It's pretty dang fun and it's real cheap. Then after doing that for a while, you'll want to get a kayak or boat.

By all means, if you aren't confident with the ocean, don't let us push you into it (not literally).  Work into it at your own pace.  Maybe attend a hookup in some calm areas of the ocean & work from there IF it's something you want to do.
