bringing my nephews out to fish. the oldest is a bass fisherman so dont need to worry bout him. the youngest's idea of fishing is throwing rocks at the fish he can see. anyone fish perch here and know if the grubs work well? would you fish close to the jetty or further away. ill still look for holes and sloughs. any advice would be appreciated. thank you

One of my coworkers just got into fishing, I always give him tips on where to go to fish from shore but he always ends up going to Moss and getting skunked. Best bet for fishing there is poke poling with a strip of squid for rockfish and eels. I'm sure there are perch available on the beach side but I've never tried for them.

Alien is my go to brother when it comes to perch fishing. He knows the ins and outs of perch fishing from Moss to Monterey including Santa Cruz.
Shoot him a pm if he does not chime in on time.

Go to ML Liquors on the corner of hwy 1 & Portrero Rd. They have bloodworms, pile worms, ghost shrimp, and grass shrimp right now...if you want guaranteed fish. I prefer pile worms.
Then hit the beach at the end of Portero (that's the north end of Salinas River SB) and throw 1.5" grubs or bait on a carolina rig. If using bait, you can also fish off the jetty for other species like striped/black perch, rockfish, batrays, etc. I prefer the north jetty casting straight out from the end. Or just drop some bait down into the little pockets of water between the jetty rocks for eels & rockfish.

im hoping to beach fish mostly. as i want the kids to stay off the rocs. the youngest always falls and i would hate to try to pull him out from between the rocks. also his mom is a bit of a worry wart. so safety first. lol. so salinas state river? ill google that and see where there is available parking. the bait thing i may not do. i have over 300 motor oil red, green , and gold grubs.. with the youngest ill cast retrieve hook and pass to him.lol. thanks bros for the tips. i hope the lil guy catches a decent sized on

big hammer motor oil grub on a #8 hook works best for me.  That or Berkeley sand worm. Tear them at 2''.  Both on Carolina rig using 1once weight on 8lb floro leader.

Helps to know how to read troughs cast right past the trough and reel slowly through the trough.   Its fun to catch even the small ones.   I only target them if my family wants to hang on the beach..   All other fishing is on kayak.  :smt003

I find using 8lb leader gave lots of knots from line looping around in the surf......others recommended going larger to get a little stiffer line to avoid this...I'm gonna try 12 next time

I have caught a lot of little perch just north of Moss Landing at Pajaro Dunes. You can park at the end of Beach St. from Watsonville and walk out anywhere on the beach. It's always very safe there and no rocks. +1 on the motor oil grubs with red flake.
