If all you want a newt for is RCG & Hali, get something to "meet the requirements of DFG".  Generally speaking, most use a gaff, lip grip or bare hands to land RCG & hali anyways.

yeah, a ling will roll and just make a mess out of a net.
I much prefer to gaff lings, or use a swiveling grip like Boga or lucid. If you use a non-swiveling plastic gripper a strong ling can twist it out of your hand or injure itself when thrashing.
I carry an 18" opening diver;s lobster bag as a net, and it has worked on all our regular cen coast catches. Doubles as a nice way to pack all of my other landing stuff too.

I want them to 'roll' in my net..then I can do stuff like get the other ling on my other hook...or...get my shit that dropped in the water..i let those big sucka roll into tight ball...then set the net down and stow my gear and clear my deck etc..the ling is sitting there looking at me immobilized....then i can work my stuff and deal with it when i want...any big net you can find and like works...big giant wall mart one and cut the handle...big net..big fish..
look at the gold one in the green kayak to get an idea how much slack is in the big green netting....i left the handle long and have a back angled pvc to stow for paddle in and out...when fishing it is right behind my shoulder etc..

We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.

I want to stay as close to the edge as I can without going over. Out on the edge you see all kinds of things you can't see from the center.

not saying gaffing dont work better.. just i like to net em...hang the net over my toe dangling in the water...while i bring the ling up and guide it two hands on rod next to or in...then one hand goes to the handle pin it under my arm until then and rest on my toe...ready freddy for a fish..
If i ever get to catch a butt or wsb I'll gaff it

no worries, if you are planning to retain the fish, sure go for it.

What I meant to convey is that if it is a fish that will be released getting wrapped in a net can harm it. Lingcod, tough as they can be, can still be damaged by wrapping in a net.

i've seen them roll on lip grippers and tear their jaws off or flop on a deck and break rod tips or hook my leg rolling the second hook around in a tissy fit..had one break my FF base free..had one hook my wife in her thumb and we then had to quit fishing and to an e.r...had them snap fish grippers...but the worse was seeing a baby 15-20" ling tear it's bottom jaw to shreds rolling on a gripper under it's own force...all could be avoided I know...user error..but still

I guess each person has their own way and can teach it to new folks just as good as the next guys way..whatever works for someone and does not hurt them or the fish...use your feet ..heck i dont care...just do ittttttttttt  :smt008

If your gonna keep it, doesn't matter which way you "retain" it so long as you do.  If your going to release it, it's best to keep them IN the water, and release your hook, never lifting them out of the water, netting them, or gaffing them.

+1  :smt023 Salmon and Halibut have HIGH mortality rates when netted and released.
