Are you fishing proximal to buddy w/ a net that's "available for immediate use to assist in landing undersize fish"?
= rule satisfied.*

And, no, the net need not feature a circular opening, despite the reference to a "diamater" in the regs

Petco has them, they are 20" but you can cut the handle down two inches. I use mine to land RacinRob's lings!  :smt044

I "think" the smallest dimension must satisfy the 18" .... or the largest .... one of the two :smt002

the rule
every angling boat must have a net 18" or bigger
the kayak rule word of mouth from a floating pair of dfg guys. 2 years back..."as long as one of you guys has one"

the word of mouth last week when Aptos took my spare to go with his yak and  him and his Hot date went dabbing..." no you dont 'have to have one"
that was right from a field officer

the rule in the book.....yes

conclusion ---get a net....get a nice BIG net and  put a noodle on the handle...it will come in very handy.... :smt003

One of the most important considerations is always what the guy with the gun standing in front of you thinks the reg says.

Know the regulations for what you're doing BECAUSE the guy with the gun may not know!  If need be, don't argue, let a judge rule.  Several seasons ago, at Fort Ross, we were stopped and ask where are nets were.  He didn't write us because he was not sure of the net size.  Carried an 18 incher every since.

The largest opening of the net must be 18" or longer.

The irony is that I can easily handle an 'undersized' fish because... it's small! I can lift it a few inches out of the water into my kayak and then gently release it on its merry way. Unless you have a rubber coated mesh, I think a net can do more harm to the fish by removing slime coat, tangling hooks, etc.

Anyway, I was more interested in avoiding a ticket, so thanks for the input. I actually didn't see that the onion bag or net had to be accessible.
Thanks fish!

There is absolutely no doubt that this law is exceedingly stupid.

never heard anyone say how and when and what type fish we must use the net on...or else...  cause we are gonna ticket every kayak we see just cause we can..just says 'have one in case you want to use it to help a fish in a given situation'
seems like good advice in case some  brand spanking new weekend warrior ,treble barb hooks a nice 18" salmon and cant figure out what to do etc..etc

poking holes in the net reg and seeing if you can show how big your brain is to a water cop that might be having a bad day ..seems kind of like' us against them;...is that the deal here..kayak fisherman that are so smart and crafty that poor dumb DFG  could learn a thing or two ..and!!! we'll show them every chance we can how more right we have to be out there and know more than everyone....you just try and write me a ticket son ...looky here son - I is wearing my wife panty hose in my pants..there !! thats my net....

unreal....

see that guy over there  boy...he's a kayak fisherman....rare breed ....

Many of us here use the EGO nets for landing most fish and BIG nets for Salmon, WSB, etc...

If all you want a newt for is RCG & Hali, get something to "meet the requirements of DFG".  Generally speaking, most use a gaff, lip grip or bare hands to land RCG & hali anyways.
