I keep think if a 3d printer can just make these reels.  I know it's a lot high precision.

The realm of affordable 3D printing for this type of use just isn't there yet for production products.  These manufacturers still do this for prototype work though.

As a side note ... I tend to stay away from reels/rods that have some 'Pro's name on them THOUGH I do have a KVD (Quantum) spinning reel my wife bought me from BPS & it is a fairly smooth reel.  I've been fairly happy with Quantum reels over the years (freshwater)

One reason to look at them is....they might have built their success working a specific technique so their rods are dialed in for that purpose.  The best rod I've ever owned for crankbaits was an old glass Berkley bass fishing rod.  This thing was magic with hardbaits and the only rods I've seen that were close to the same action (well, without costing an arm and a leg) were KVD's cranking rods.  I also have a steelhead/salmon rod with some great lakes kook's name on it, cant remember who cause I'm not really into that scene, but the action on it is great.  Also looked at the seeker paul elias rods for chuckin bigger baits like the a-rig.

Obviously look at the quality of the rod, check the spline and look at the guide wraps.  You will be able to tell which is a decent rod and which are slapped together signature series for marketing/sales purposes.

I do agree that there are some rods made by high end manufacturers such as G-Loomis & Dobbins that are "signature series" style of rods.  Then you have some that are sold at BPS with a "signature" that aren't all that great (generally).  Again, it all comes down to having confidence in your gear.  My "confidence" gear for MANY years added up to ~$40 and I caught a LOT of trout, carp & bass locally on that setup.
