Backslider, sounds like you are getting it ready for BATTLE! I have never launched from China Camp but I believe it has been done. This weekend has a BIG Hi-tide then a minus tide DUMP.I and Sudmucker "PLAN A" to launch from BULLHEAD FLATS,just past the China Camp Main Area.I think you got to pay to park in the lot and is next to the water.Sudmucker wants to anchor,I will be HUNTING for striper on the troll.I know the current is gonna get crazy,so we are planning on hitting the top of tide=2hrs before max. & 2 after is the plan.I have not posted a hook up yet.but will do so.

Hi Fishunter,

This sounds doable to me.  I still don't have an anchor set-up yet, but the timing sounds better for trolling anyway.  Saturday?

On a side note... I wanted to mount a skene chock back aft and then run the anchor line to a cam cleat right next to my seat.  Anybody ever use this type of chock from a kayak?

Hi Fishunter,

If the weather comes up, my plan B will be to get out on Lake Sonoma.  I'll at least be able to test the fishfinder installation... still think I should have dropped the extra fifty bucks and gone with the Matrix 17 instead of the Eagle 245DS, but there were a lot of recommendations for the 245, so we'll see...

Anyway, I'll be watching the forecasts today.

Also, I think I'm going to use a regular chock instead of the skene... might be a little safer.

Backslider, where ya coming from?I am thinking of a wind protected spot in Benicia State Park.It needs a HIGH tide to get deep enough to fish it.There is a big-tullie-lined cove that the stripers trap the bait along. It cost 4$ to park there or down the street alittle further is a free Public launch and closer to the deep water of the Carquinez.OHH! the options :smt002

Doing SP on Monday 11/6 will be min. two of us out and have never fished this area from Kayak. Would like suggesstions on launching areas. More into the hunt (striper) then anchor (sturgeon) but still doable. Frankfishing

Some launches and advise.

China Camp (the beach at the main entrance):  Very easy launch.  Mudfest if tide is less than about 0.5 feet.

Bullhead Flats:  Very easy launch.  Mudfest if tide is negative.

McNear's Pier:  Easy launch.  No tide issues.

Buck's Landing:  Easy launch.  Must find Gallinas Creek channel to get back at low or minus tide, which hugs the shoreline. Means considerable detour around mud flats if tide gets too low.  Longer paddle out into the flats.

Fish end of incoming, high, and beginning of outgoing tides for clearest water if you're trolling, drifting, or plugging for stripers.

Once the water muddies up, then it's anchor/bait fishing time.

Make sure you don't get too far downstream from your launch on a big outgo or you'll have a LOOOOOOOOONG paddle back against the current.

MolBass,

Other places to try are Oyster Pt.(has a bait shop at the launch), Coyote Pt. or Oakland Airport.  Much later on in the season.  When the herring are running in theses places.  All are short paddles and easy launches.  But, one thing when the tides get moving.  Try to stay anchor.  Do not try to paddle up hill.  Tides really get moving so bring a lot of anchor (heavy) and plenty of rope.

AHhhh...I miss the days of frantic paddles in 6" of water trying to make it to the channel in Gallinas Creek before being swamped in mud that goes to your waist if you try to stand in it, then paddling your ass off only to move inches at a time against the rushing outgoing current and slopping through the mud at the landing at Buck's.

And, boy, do I miss breaking my back the day before pumping ghostshrimp with a mediocre pump.

Can't wait to get back out there!!!

Kz, thanks for the info will use your advise especially about the moving tide. Scallen told me about one episode he had out there and how he fought the current to get back.Didn't sound like alot of fun.

Ken, How about Monday if your available.

Fishunter,

Yeah, I've fished that cove from the shoreline... pre-kayak days... really need the kayak to do it right.  That'd be an option, though I'd prefer the bay (I'm coming from Santa Rosa so the drive time is more or less the same)... China Camp or Bullhead Flats.  You wanted to head out at the high end of the tide so mud won't be an issue, current really won't either, and I STILL don't have an anchor set-up (they sent it USPS... may never show up!)  I can't remember... anybody besides you and Sudmucker expressed an interest?

Erik,

Are you fishing this weekend?
