Hey,

Anybody doing any "pre-season" scouting for sturgeon?  I'd like to get out somewhere this weekend, probably San Pablo, or maybe the Mothball fleet... weather permitting.

I live in the area, let me know if you want to hook-up this weekend for some "scouting"  :smt006

The NCKA guys launch out of Buck's Landing.  It is a long paddle and need a depth finder/fish finder if you go out at low or come in at low.  Channel is only 6ft or less and the sides are all mud.

I wouldn't waste your time in San Pablo right now if you really want to target sturgeon...  most of the sturgeon action is up in Sisuin Bay or the delta right now.  Mothball Fleet would probably be a great location to try.

Should be lots of stripers in San Pablo though, and I'm sure lots of shark and ray action.

Hi Erik,

Yeah, I know it's still too early for sturgeon in SP Bay... actually, I wanted to try the paddle from Buck's to the Pumphouse and back.  I'm breaking in the new yak and would like to fine-tune some of the layout before I REALLY need to use it.  Of course, a striper or ten would be an added bonus... and the virgin catch.

By the way, I think I live something like two blocks from you... I'm off of Edgewater Drive (one block north of Hearn and Stony Point).

When does the "season" start?

I have a outdoor writer buddy in San Diego that wants to do an article on kayak sturgeon fishing and I would like to look at tide tables and give him some open windows to think about coming up.

Hi MolBasser,

You can catch them year round but the best time is from November through March.

Hey Backslider... yeah... you're just up the road from me.  I'm off of Dutton Meadow.

I'm sure you'd have plenty of action soaking shrimp in the bay this time of year... sharks and rays are likely plentiful with plenty of stripers cruising to boot.

I'm looking forward to sturgeon season... we had some great adventures last year.

By the way... supposedly the sturgeon action has been pretty hot lately out of Pittsburgh near the PG&E Plant.  Deeper water but it is fishable.  Apparently salmon roe is the bait de-jour.  I've fished it once in the kayak.  Wouldn't want to be up there in a huge outgoing tide, but a moderate tide would be fine as long as the wind cooperated.  Fishing is 30 to 40 ft generally, so definitely need a long anchor rope.  Might be worth a try for some advenurous soul.  It's a neat area to paddle.

Should we wait til the Chocolate Shake flushes the bay? I am trying to get out to the China Camp area this Sat.(never Yaked) for the stripers and misc.(shark/dino?)The fall is here and I know those Big Stripers are migrating up.I trolled the Pinole/Hercules/Rodeo(east bay shoreline prior to Carquinez) area and the Brickyard(San Rafael) the past two weeks for NADA and I'm determined to hook a biggin' soon.

MolBass,

It does get rough out there at Buck's.  It is a different kind of swell then the Ocean.  Fast hard choppers and it will buck you around real good.

Also, is about a 3 mile paddle.  6 miles round trip.  I think I been out there 3 times and did not have a calm day.

Hi Erik,

Stripers are fine with me.  Like I said, I'm mainly interested in a nice long paddle... a little weather would make things interesting and give me a chance to see how the Tarpon handles the chop.  Besides, I don't even have an anchor rigged up yet ( Mr. UPS Man should have it tomorrow).  Tonight I was busy installing two flushmounts, two RAM Tubes, and my fishfinder transducer (Goop method).  I'll finish the new-school power supply tomorrow at work and try to figure out where the fishfinder head unit and the GPS are going.  Hopefully everything will be ready by this weekend...
