This Saturday Nomad and I fished at Garrapata SP. In short, the trip was adventure - tough launch, good fishing, beaten and exhausted.

The ocean condition was good, but Garrapata coast access was challenge – long haul (up and down), ropes are required, need to climb steep cliff. With split-second missteps, it would be dangerous, not to mention kayak damage. In short, the access is not recommended.

The plus side is fishing was excellent – kind of explained by the access. We fished different spots - poking holes around kelp beds and jigging around rocks and on reefs. Fish was everywhere - abundance. Both Nomad and I caught nice strings of quality fish. I got 2 lings and 5 reds + 2 olives, while Nomad got 2 lings and 8 reds. A couple vermilions had nice sizes (21” and 22”). The bigger ling was 37” and 17.5# (see pictures below).

I post some pictures here and keep our kayak fishermen updated. Enjoy ...

Yep.  Big lings and reds and challenging access.  Cool that you guys could enjoy it.  Thanks for sharing.

Nice haul (fish and gear both I mean  :smt003) Way to go on an adventure for fish. Makes my mountainteering blood boil--you mean I could climb and rappel *and* kayak fish on the same trip?  :smt007 Oh wait my wife saw my type this--just kidding--I hung up my 5.10s, ice axe, crampons, and harness for good :smt010 Makes Bean Hollow seem tame though hehe.

Man...I was so tired after that...I fell asleep on my buddy's couch watching the Ultimate Fighting Championship.  Rich Franklin lost his belt and was given a permanent, but unflattering nose job by Silva...in case we have any other UFC fans out there.

The best day I have had on a kayak so far.  3 of my vermillion were over 5 lbs with one at 6lbs.  My biggest ling was 31 1/2" but looked tiny next to Eric's MONSTER!  I think he must have caught about 4 keepers.  I ended up catching 3 keeper lings (back-to-back-to-back) and an underling.  The last ling I caught was pretty nice, but he had to go back to the water.  I lost 2 fish to the seals and about 3 fish that I released were eaten by them.

Thanks for the pics and the good time Eric!

Excellent results guys!!!

Just curious, did you paddle north or south of Soberanes?

Thanks for the great report!

Oh, and just noticed the lure on Nomad's rod in one of the pics. Looks like a small kastmaster or pixie spoon. Is that what you caught fish on?

See ya,
PK

Great catch guys. Nice pics too. Wish I was there.
I am a HUGE UFC fan. Always like seeing a good @ss whoopin'. Just read my signature. It is a line right before a HUGE @ss whoopin is handed out.

thanks for compliment, guys

PK - We were fishing at South of Soberanes Pt and around kelp beds. Fish were thick. The challenge was to dodge small ones and target big ones. Many lures work. We used 3 or 4 oz jig + scampi with colors (red, green, white).
Alien - I need to be more conservative and careful next time. That place was a challenge.
Tote - We saw yours.

That lure is a pixie...actually two of them.  My buddies and I call thenm Alaskan Tourist Lures.  It would make us cringe when we would see a nice fish caught on that lure and it was always a tourist who would be using it.  And we would always find a bunch of them in and around the rivers up there due to tourists getting them snagged or casting into the trees.

Anyway, I took two of them, pounded out some lead to fit the gap and gooped them together.  It caught alot of blues.

Nice fish, adventure, and pictures! I'd like to see a pic of someone going back up the hill!

Anderson Silva is no joke. Rich Franklin is one bad ass cat and Silva handled him in the first round. I was shocked.

But what would you expect from a fighter out of CHUTE BOX?

Uhh...now back to fishing.
