So it's less than 10 days before the commercial salmon season opens and I still don't have a deckhand. I'm not too worried because I can fish solo, but would prefer not to.
What you need to know:
It's a percentage based position. If we don't catch fish, you don't make money. Percentages are based on experience. (Between
You will be a private contractor who signs a release of liability.
Military/police/fire/first responder experience is a big plus.
Sleep is a commodity in very short supply on a commercial salmon boat. If you need a regular 4 hrs a day to function don't apply. We usually get 4+ a night, but not always.
You must be willing to work up to 20 hrs a day for up to 5 days in a row without coming into port.
Mechanical experience it's a big plus.
No hard drugs. By that I mean no coke, meth or heroin( oxy etc). I don't care what you do on land when we're in port, but not on the boat.
You must be sea sick resilient. My boat has a narrow beam and shallow draft.
We will be fishing every daylight hour possible for the next three months. The only things that keeps us in the harbour are bad weather, mechanical problems, lack of supplies (fuel, ice, water or food) or unloading fish.
We may "trip fish" anywhere between Morro Bay and Shelter Cove. You may be out of contact with loved one's for days on end.

To be honest I'm no highliner and this well be only my second season as a salmon boat captain. Many of my previous deckhands have been young men with previous commercial boating experience (crabbing) but no salmon experience. They worked for me for a while and got experience running the gear and then got jobs (with a smaller percentage) on big "slammers". That's ok with me as long as you are upfront with me and give me fair warning
You may want to think of this as a hard working adventure/internship/foot in the door experience, rather than a big money making opportunity. It's fishing, there are no guarantees.
If this hell on earth sounds like something you want to do, post up.

I did it on salmon and albacore boats when I was younger and didn't have a family. Straight up best and most memorable times of my life. Hard work? Yep. But you're getting paid to fish! How fucking bad could it be? Pretty bad at times. But you're getting paid to fish. Sleeping in a stinky bunk or hammock? rarely. But you're getting PAID TO FISH! (sometimes  :smt044 )

nuf said. if you can do it, DO IT!
