Hey guys,

I'll probably be hitting Sand Dollar Beach this weekend with the fam (no yak).  Anyone have luck fishing from shore/sand/cliffs there?  Any general tips?

Thanks!

Naoki

I've camped there a number of times over the years. Good perch fishing from the beach with sand crabs on a surf leader, or motor oil grubs carolina rigged. I know of folks catching stripers there as well. Sand dollar is a magnet for swell so keep your eye on the surf when on the beach. Have fun and good luck.

Thanks Soleman,

I've never been good at surf fishing...  Things can only get better!

Suggestions on how much weight to use when carolina rigging?  or with a surf leader?

I know I have some motor oil grubs somewhere...  I've heard good things about the Berkley Sand Worm so I might look for those too.

I have been using a 1 oz egg sliding sinker and  then a plastic salmon egg to protect the knot from bouncing/fraying...main line-egg sinker-salmon egg- tied to a small barrel swivel then 3', 6 to 12 lb leader # 6 or #8 bait holder hooks....little dab of scent...and little rubber grubs...I lost two surprise strippers by using 6 lb leader and then went to 12lb leader...

Light spin setup, 1/2oz-1oz sinkers. Ditto on the leader line, the heavier leader also tends to not get twisted up on your bait/lure/hook when getting tossed around by heavy surf. If going with the carolina rig don't give up on your retrieve until it's all the way in, I've hooked em' a few feet from my ankles in less than a foot of water.

Ditto what the others said. But if u wanna catch some cabezon, rockfish, and lings hike out the trail across from the campground, towards the point where Plaskett rock is. Or south towards Jade cove. Use chunks of squid on 4/0 octopus hooks & 3oz sinker on a dropper loop (of surf rig). You'll get snaged a few times but the reward is worth it. Good luck!

Success!  Landed 3, lost 2...  This one measured about 12.5"  Thanks for your input everyone!

I fished around the rocks on the south end of the beach and landed an undersized cabezon (around 12") that got chased by a dog as soon as I pulled it up on shore!  I had to lift it up with the rod and spin in circles a couple times until someone came and grabbed the dog!  Wish someone had video of that!

Looks like you got the whole beach for yourself.  Thanks for the report and picture Naoaki.

The campground is looking great (not that I ever saw it before). Love that there is a lot of grass for the kid to run around on, and that there is a lot of shade!  We will definitely be going back.  My wife mentioned that it's a great spot for newbie campers.  About the only things some might complain about are the lack of showers and lack of privacy.

The weather was pretty much perfect and we were able to snag a site with a nice water view.

They did upgrade the facilities--it took over a year. The bathrooms by the group sites are the best/cleanest.
Congrats on some nice fish and a fun wknd, Naokiman. Thanks for the report.
