My tallest tree seems to be dying.  Branches are dropping on a pretty regular basis, and it's a larger tree than I feel comfortable messing with, (40 feet, maybe more).  Does anyone do that sort of work, or care to recommend anyone in the east bay?

Is it possibly encroaching a PGE line? Because they m/b able to help trim the tree or remove it...if it poses a threat to public safety.

One other thing to consider. Is the tree on a city easement. A neighbor had the same problem but the tree actually was on the city easement. They paid a crew to remove it. and they left the wood for people to burn. It was a big red Oak.

I live in the Santa Cruz mountains, surrounded by huge redwood and douglas fir trees. We've hired a lot of different people to limb and remove trees---some crews are great, and some are a hazard. Even different crews that nominally work for the same company can be as different as night and day. Unfortunately, I doubt any of the people we've had here would venture as far as the east bay.

In any case, I'd strongly suggest getting several bids, since estimates often vary wildly (like by a factor of 2 or 3 for the exact same work), and regardless of the quoted price, be sure to negotiate. Also, ask for multiple references, check that their insurance is valid, etc., before you let them loose on your tree.
I don't like stuff that sucks.

Thanks, fellas.  Unfortunately it is in the back yard nowhere near the lines.  It's juuust big enough that I fear it might crush the fence or damage the roof if I try to drop it myself.  I think just having someone lop the top off would be enough and I could handle the rest.

I found a well-reviewed place nearby but will get several quotes.

I'm a landscape contractor and I use 'Vacarros Tree Service' (415) 457-7134. They're in San Anselmo but I've hired him for sub jobs in the east bay. The owner Chris has been working in the bay area since the early 80's, is super nice and has very reasonable rates. Just my two cents good luck with the tree.

There is a landscaping company that I follow on Facebook located in Hayward that offers their cut wood for pick up.  I've never used them but I figure that's another company you can contact:
