Just wondering how many of you communicate while on the water. Are you one that hogs the air wave or the one who listen more than speaks. What device do you use? I use a standard horizon 280 S.

A handheld VHF is quickly becoming a mandatory piece of equipment for kayak fishermen. But most people don't understand the basics of how/when to use it. Note: it's not for chatting about the weather or what's biting...even though sometimes during tournaments people get very chatty...which is annoying.
One of the more interesting uses is listening to nearby boaters' conversations...because they assume we don't carry VHFs. The things you hear on the radio!  :jawdrop   :smt044
I like Standard Horizon and Uniden brands.

I carry a VHF and a cell phone. It is convenient. NCKA use 69 for the most part, but up north we tend to just use the channels the power boaters use. The power boaters know we have radios and do talk to us. We have a pretty good relationship with them for the most part.

Tournament chatter can get pretty annoying but as long as the channel is clear when there is a situation calling for it, I don't see the harm. Just don't believe someone who says there are tow trucks on the beach towing kayaker's trucks if that should ever come up.

:smt005...oh wait :smt011 :smt012

I don't tend to talk much on the VHF, unless the situation is one where that is appropriate. Safety aside, the ability to talk to each other & listen to comms during the day is a really fun part of the modern yakfishing experience, IMHO
