well, after much debate and laziness i have comitted to going to launch soberanes pt / garrapata park. i will report with findings after saturday. with swells so low , i cant justify passing the opportunity up this weekend. i dont particularly want to deal with reggae traffic and all the "hey mon" so i thought i would try just south of the bay.

I have a few pinnacles and gps numbers so I'll do my best to hit up some of them out further.

im going with my wife and friend alain and i have some gps spots from diving the area off a boat. the areas are south of soberanes and about 1/2 mile out.

the only thing that will prevent this would be unexpected well and how its hitting the beach since it is a rocky entry and i can't afford to risk safety.

i'll mark what i can and report back. i think this area is fishy if you are far offshore , more than 1/2 mile, since inshore its pretty non-fishy from what i have seen diving the garrapata side. soberanes side is fishy though. i htink its just because of wave action mostly hitting the garrapata side.

DUDE!
I just wrote a big, long-winded response but it disappeared! BOOO, I hate computers!

Anywho...
I will re-type a response.

I have fished the Garrapata and Soberanes Pt area about 15 times in the past couple years...albiet from shore. I was going to ask where you plan to launch because I have some suggestions--surf launch near Garrapata creek (shorter carry) or where Soberanes Creek enters or some closer spots that would require climbing over rocks (third turnout after the Garrapata sign). The best area to fish is supposedly off the south side of Soberanes Pt...I have a friends who is a dive instructor and he has seen many good fish there...probably the same area you're planning to hit.

Good luck, and I look forward to your report!

hey sin, sorry you lost the original response. thats the beauty of these computers! as far as garrapata and soberanes, its a nice spot, seems like the garrapata side has fewer figh though. i freedived garrapata a couple of times and it was kind of empty but lots of plant life and few fish. i think its because if there is any wave action at all it hits that side usually. however, i hiked down soberanes pt with my diveboard and spear and got some good pickings at the south of the point in shallow water up to 25 feet. it was surgy and rough that day i went but it was well worth the trip. i just want to see whats offshore in my kayak this time.

when i did the shore dive the first thing i noticed was the massive schools of blacks. usually they are some of the first to go if there is fishing. i would crawl over kelp and peer through the holes and see swarming black rockfish all between 10-12 inches each. i went further and saw lits of blue schools, large opal eyes and perch as well as greenlings. i know there are lings there somewhere. i hunted in and on holes and the terrain on the bottom was very similar to the north coast.

at garrapata i park on hwy 1 and head down the trail to the dirt cliff by the creek mouth. then lower everything down. it smells there but its the eaiest way to get in. south soberanes is steep and involves going over slippery granite faces. i used a floatline for a rope to lower things down but its doable. just i would not do so with a kayak.

we'll see how it goes if its launchable. i may do some diving on the shallower pinnacles south of the point but if the wind kicks up and the current gets strong we wil be heading in pronto. sure as hell dont want that kayak getting away from me.

i'll keep ya posted!
