I want to give the community an update on the current status of 2014 PIF.
As of today, we have not located a recipient for PIF donations in 2014. We have reached out to a number of potential recipients, but they have all declined thus far.
I am not soliciting suggestions/opinions/advice; just reporting the facts, as we believe it's important to keep our community informed.
I'll make sure we provide another status update when we locate a recipient for PIF donations in 2014.
Thanks for your continued support!

What a nice problem to have.

I don't see a problem with a PIF rainy day fund. Family and travel emergencies always come in an instant and have a way of having really bad timing. A reserve for that situation could come in really handy.

Thanks for giving everyone the update PK.

Just to inform everyone as well...AOTY/DOTY fees will still go to PIF, after Piscean plaques are purchased for top 3, and smaller "big fish" plaques are purchased.

I have attached a screenshot showing the current balance in the AOTY/DOTY account.

I have also been in touch with LoletaEric about our efforts to determine what exactly to do with PIF 2014 $ since he has expressed interest in doing a silent auction at GS8 to generate $ for PIF.

I have already put in a request for a brand new kayak for the grandprize for the actual PIF event, and have every reason to believe we will get it.

This is not something any of the A-Hulls take lightly and we have been doing a lot of talking and thinking about the right way to proceed...

We appreciate your patience while we decide the proper course of action.

 :smt008

Sincerely,

Jim

ps...VK, PIF (Pay It Forward) is organized by the A-Hulls and has donated over $33,000 since 2010 to NCKA members battling Cancer. You can click on the A-Hull link in my signature to see who the A-Hulls are and a breakdown of how much $ was raised each year. In the past the $ went to Mooch and Shicken. Mooch has passed, and Shicken is in remission and has been able to return to work. Thus, the "problem" of not having a recipient at this moment.

For those not familiar with PIF, here is a little blurb I have been using to solicit prizes/donations:

For the past four years a few of my NorCal Kayak Angler buddies and I (we are informally known as the A-Hulls) have put on a fundraising event to raise $ for our kayak angler brothers battling Cancer. PIF has raised and donated over $33,000 since 2010.

The Pay It Forward (PIF) events also celebrate life (and this awesome thing we call kayak fishing), and promote cancer awareness.

PIF combines both a paddle, a raffle and a potluck and a ton of fun.

The first PIF raised over $6,000, and the grand prize was a Wilderness Systems kayak donated by Mark and Karen from Hook1.

Encouraged by this success we coordinated the second PIF and changed the venue to Monterey Bay Kayaks at Del Monte Beach to help with logistics.  The second PIF in 2011 raised over $9,000 and the grand prize was an OK T13 donated by Alain Satre of the A-Hulls.

The third PIF in 2012 raised ~ $8,000 and the grandprize was a Santa Cruz Kayaks Raptor donated by Jim Martin owner of Santa Cruz Kayaks.

The fourth and most recent PIF in 2013 was our most successful yet. We changed the venue to Half Moon Bay to make it closer to Joel and his family, Daniel Shim of the A-Hulls donated his OK T13 as the grand prize, and we raised over $10,000!!

http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=47996.0

The PIF funds have primarily gone to Joel "Mooch Lotilla" who passed away on 9/29/13.

Even though Joel has passed, there are other NCKA members battling cancers and other serious illnesses, and we are committed to continuing PIF to keep helping our brothers in need...we actually talked to Joel before he passed and that is what he wanted us to do, so that is what we will do to honor his memory.

Sincerely,

Jim

What a nice problem to have.
Wholeheartedly agree.

Being a newb  what exactly is Pay It Forward  been reading the posts from time to time ...
Good question. This PIF thing has evolved to mean many different things to many different people. (which is awesome!)
But, in short, it's a venue for us (all of US) to help members of our community whom may be in need of financial assistance. Or any other form of support.
It first came about when our dearest friend and leader was diagnosed with cancer. It was demoralizing, and many people wanted to know how they could help. So we decided to organize some sort of fundraising event. That event became the Pay It Forward Paddle, which was held in Santa Cruz on 7/17/2010. It was a very grass-roots type of event...the entire NCKA community rallied together and it was a great success. Over the years it has taken many forms. From there, it's kind of whatever you (the community) wants it to be. And it's something we can all be proud of. Helping a brother/sister in need is not an obligation, but it's the right thing to do. That's what makes this club so great.
Here's the report from the original PIF event: http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=24675.0

Dang Jim, you type fast!
You replied twice in the time it took me to type my reply LOL...

Also, I want to point out that PIF is not just an A-hull thing. It's so much more; all of us contribute to it. So it's a community effort. Anybody who wants to start up some kind of PIF event/fundraiser/raffle/auction is free to do so--and you'll have our full support. There is no monopoly on helping your fellow man.

Good Stuff Fellas,  really glad to be a part of this group that not only share a passion for fishing and the outdoors,  but a passion for helping our fellow beings and we just saw with Frankfishing and Polepole, fellow lizards…   :tongue2:

Personally, PIF is one of my favorite events and I look forward to it every year now.  I went to my first PIF a couple of years ago in Monterey.  It was a long road trip from Chico to Monterey and back to Vallejo with 40 hrs straight of no sleep for me.  Now that might seem crazy to some, but PIF is infectious.  No other event quite captures the aura and camaraderie like PIF.  The PIF paddle / floatilla and fundraiser should be a NCKA membership requirement.  There is no greater feeling than chillin' on the water with your brothers and giving to a good cause.  I very much look forward to the A-hulls carrying on this tradition in one form or another.  "I very much look forward to the A-hulls carrying on this tradition"?  I never thought I would say those words together in a sentence.   :smt003

Seriously, guys I'm looking forward to PIF 2014.  I'm sure you will find some cause to inject the PIF positive vibe into.

Bret
