I had a great time with Alex (Alien) and company.  Thanks to you all for the company.  It was my first time out of Monterey and it was much more productive than Santa Cruz.  I had fished almost exclusively from Santa Cruz, except for the HMB derby and was starting to get discouraged with my poor rate of success.  So I was excited with the clear improvement in fish activity at Monterey.  My ling was 8.5 lbs--small by many of your standards--but was exciting for me.

Great stringer--I see you opted for the Monterey Bay Sampler plate. Nice Ling. Good choice :smt002 But first time my foot  :smt012 and don't give us that beginner's luck story either. We ain't buying it. Uh uh. :smt011

It was my first time.  In fact Alex (Alien) joked that he usually hopes that when he takes first-timers out they don't catch much so they won't come back (and spoil his home fishing grounds).

I'm sure we could have caught more and possibly larger rockfish but we spent the first 2-3 hours over sand because Alex was targeting his favorites--Sand dabs

Ya, I was going to ask if those are dabs there, next to the ling. And thats is a nice sized male kelp greenling! You know, the CA record is only 2lbs 9ozs...
Welcome to Monterey fishing!

Doug -

Congrats on the ling. Mike had to work at 4:00 PM so we had to leave early. Mike caught a 7.5 pound red fish on a 6 inch rootbeer single tail. Thanks to Alex for the guide service and stinger rig. Check out Mike's red fish eating 2 of my blue fish on my stringer (last supper). Had a great time, let's hookup again.

Scott/Mike,

Great fish!  I really enjoyed the day, the company and the water conditions were so calm.  After such dissapointments from my Santa Cruz outings, I can say this is the first time that I have really experienced the return of enjoyment on all the time and $ I have invested in the sport.

Being in good company certainly ranks with being in good fish.

Hope to hook up again soon.

For any wondering,

Seabreeze asked if I might have a Canary in the bunch.  I'm not sure because this was the only picture I had and I cleaned them before I read her post.  But does look suspicious so I better bring my fishing ID card next time.  Spooky because when we hit the beach the DFG met us right away and checked our counts but didn't say anything about the variety.  I was the last one coming in and was stressing that I might have miscounted because the fish were tight on my clip and hard to separate to count.  But I kne if I'd miscounted, I could hardly toss something over at that point.

Being so close to the Monterey Aquarium, I guess you should pretty much expect to be under close supervision at Monterey.

With the richness of our catches it sort of puts the lie to "no fish" don't you think?

This is certainly the year of the greenling.

HI guys,

that was a great day of fishing and was glad to see some good quality fish come up especially for the guys whose first time out in the Bay.

No worries i checked and made sure the first timers had all legal fish before we made are trip back to the launch site.

had a feeling some one was watching and that the fish and game warden would show up.

Hey Doug :smt003 sorry for joking around when you were asking me to check if your drain plug was in place :smt002

I couldn't resist to act like i didn't know what you were talking about :smt005

Mike that is a big red! that's Elk size fish there my friend...
