just had first grandchild arrive. Looking to the future and thinking about PFDs n such. So, what has worked-who makes quality small child size PFDs? Im guessing ski type is the most likely to be made for small kids. Would like to get him on water in the 2yr old range once he is water proofed n such.

Hi,

I bought this one from Cabela's for my 9yr old son.  Trust me, it works well because we took a drink first time out in the ocean.  If you happen to live near by a store, it would be great to have your grand son try it on for sizing.

The style above is what you'll need early on, it provides buoyancy in the right places to float the kid 'right-side-up' in the event of a spill...we have a Body Glove one, looks identical to this O'Neil one and I highly recommend.  Although bulky and hot in the summer, for the first couple of years this is the way to go.

Ditto what Ben just said. You'll want the infant-style at first (with support & flotation around the neck). Make sure it has a grab handle near the top...very handy. Like this: http://www.overtons.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?pdesc=Overtons-Infant-BioLite-Vest&i=44082&aID=600H5&merchID=4006
Then eventually, you can get them a "cool" life jacket. I prefer the neoprene construction to the plastic construction--seems to stay cooler on hot days.
