Just FYI,
In Cali, in general waters, you can have up to 3 lures per line and up to 3 hooks per lure.
This means that a legal A-Rig in Cali. can have up to 9 treble hooks. The reason for the controversy is the potential injury of fish from extra hooks snagging the fish outside the mouth.

I've used these:
http://www.123fishingrigs.com/

I've used them for stripers on the delta, casting and trolling from a boat.
They work almost everywhere. I haven't tried them for rock fishing yet.

Good luck!

Yakhopper, thanks for the info, I've been keeping mine with only 2 hooks total per rig as I was playing it safe.

yup they work pretty good on the Delta.  I find though that they absolutely crush the schoolie sized fish and I've yet to catch one bigger than maybe 2-3 lbs with it.

I think its funny the whole "Alabama" rig craze...guys on the east coast have been using umbrella rigs/spreaders for years on stripers out there.

Here's a schoolie from a while ago I caught at Clifton Court

I've used them, and the truth is yeah they work but there not some magical super lure, you could use them for a month straight and never catch one fish, then other times you can't keep the fish off. And yes they can get expensive with snag's.

I have a 3 hook A-rig and a 5 or 6 hook one as well.  I have had no luck with either but have only used them once or twice each for a very short period of time.  I have tried trolling as well as casting and reeling em in.

I guess i am retarded or a complete newb (likely both) but i had some trouble getting my plastic lures to "swim" properly when i was first using the Umbrella/Alabama rig.  Seems like it still looks a bit unnatural but i have tried several things to try and fix this problem.

I just need to get some more time on the boat using them.

Are you sure about this?  I wish i had my bookmarks saved but i remember doing some research and the limit is 3 hooks on these things.  When using my 5/6 hook rig i would put 2 or 3 plastic swim baits as teasers and then 3 hooked ones.

Same here, I thought they considered the rig as 1 lure so it can only have 3 hooks on it.  I didn't really follow the whole ordeal, but I've been told 3 as well.

As for success story, it works great trolling from a yak.  I used that rig 90% of the time at the delta tourney this weekend and landed about 20-25 stripers.
