So, I was thinking....
Melvin should've brought in Otero in the 5th and threw at the next batter. Like intentionally trying to hit him. Then Verlander would've had to retaliate right? Charge the mound and both players get ejected and the Tiger have to bring in another pitcher. Because the A's would've had a much better chance against anybody not named Verlander.

I'm with you Pat.  Just pinch hit with Balfour and he could take out Verlander plus a couple of their infielders.

Although it would have been far easier for Vogt to intentionally let a couple high fastballs get through to the home plate umpires head.  Maybe that would have knocked some sense into him where he would have called the same strike zone for both teams.

I was thinking the same thing.  If they couldn't bunt, they could have at least tried Beaning somebody. :smt013

Zito never was a bum dude. A fine person. He's had troubles pitching but he's no bum. Ever.

+1.  A very good dude indeed.  His "Strike Outs for Troops" program helped a lot of military families.

Did he earn his contract, that is to be debated.  But you can't blame the man for taking the money.  Everyone of us here would NOT have turned it down.

Someone behind me in line for the amazing ultimate chicken nachos( oh so good) Was whining a bit about Zito. He said he was a giants fan and WTF were they paying him for? I politely said he gave you a WS  didn't he? Shutdown fucking Detroit, then swept. An amazing finish last year and the man Zito was a huge part of that. The A's need to get an Ace!  A big lights out guy that can go 9. I read an interesting observation today. A person wrote that A's do fine hitting #'s 3,4,5 pitching hence winning 95 a year. But when it comes to the aces of the staffs they kind of go dead. Gotta do a little research on the W/L from this year to confirm but that sounds about right.

Craig the key is their Ace needs to stay healthy.  Hudson was the last consistent one I can remember.  All others got hurt doing the season in some way.  Mulder, Haren, Braden, Cahill, Duscherer, Anderson all got hurt when they should have been in their prime.  I think and hope that Gray and Straily are the real deal.  What he A's really need is someone like Zito that can just throw junk.  He complimented Mulder and Hudson with his style and he was hardly ever hurt because he didn't throw hard.

I'd disagree with this one. That may be true for 2012 but not this year. We've beaten plenty of aces down the stretch. Look at the Pittsburgh series, all the games against Darvish, we beat David price in September. Should've swept 4 in Detroit as well back in august. There's more that I can't think of from the top of my head.
I have a quick fix for next year... If we want to get deeper, sign  Mr Carlos beltran to replace Reddick. So tired of watching josh wiff with runners in scoring position. He had three opportunities this series that he completely failed on. Game 1, cespedes on 3rd and 1 out he strikes out. Game 2, cespedes on 2nd and smith on 1st, no outs. He pops out on a bunt attempt. Game 4, bases loaded no outs in the top of 8th. He strikes out! I'm sorry but reddick was the lvp this series.

Reddicks defense is one of the best in the league. He hit 32 dingers last year. Plagued by wrist injuries this year. Anyone can have a mediocre season at any time. Beane isn't going to shell out millions for a right fielder dude. Verlander and Sherzer are aces. Over the long haul they own the A's hands down. Fact. Our starting pitchers are questionable on any given day. Plus when you have to consistently use the bullpen for the last 4 innings you are eventually doomed.

I'm wearing my #75 Oakland jersey right now  :smt001
Seems like depth is good for the reg season but it doesn't matter as much during the playoffs. I mean, our starters from last year's playoff run were in the pen this postseason...like Tommy Malone & AJ Griffin. They got depth. But I'd like to see them flip a couple midlevel guys for an ace. We still got a few up & comers on the way like Michael Ynoa the guy we outbid Boston & NY for a few yrs ago when he was 16. Then maybe sign Huddy & Corey Hart in the offseason.

Corner outfielders defense are over rated. Yea he's got a one hell of a canon but the pinpoint here is playoff performance. Without the wrist injury reddick is an easy 20+ homerun guy hitting .250. The guy has a beautiful swing but its a very long swing hence the ridiculous strikeout rate. and about the beltran signing, cmon bro! I'm an A's fan, we all already know that's wishful thinking.
