Hi guys,

Just looking for some ideas on what I should get. I'm looking for a kayak, to use as a means to access old and new fishing spots. One example is to go through the Brisbane tubes (its a 30 minute hike along the freeway - which doesn't sit well with CHP officers). Or only 30 seconds to just go underneath  :smt003 . Basically, its purpose is just to get from A to B, and fish from spots that aren't accessible by land. And this is kind of what I'm looking for:

1)small/lightweight/easy transportation/storage/quick.
2)durable material that can stand up to beaching on rocky shorelines.
3)cheap. Don't need anything fancy, no need for pole holders/storage/etc (since I travel light).

That being said, I am sort of on the fence to weather or not I should just get a sit on top "fishing" kayak, and use it for double duty. That would be great b/c it would also function as your standard fishing kayak. But the catch is that it wouldn't be ideal for use as a means of transportation. So, is there anyone else around here who does this? If so what are you using or what do you recommend? Thanks for the ideas!

DO NOT PADDLE THROUGH THE BRISBANE TUBES!!!  :smt011 The current flowing through them can be very strong since the lagoon fills and drains with the tides through them.

If you want to fish the tubes, fish on the bay side during an outgoing tide.

If you are looking for a cheap used kayak, check out Monterey Bay Kayak's used kayak sale:

You may have seen this article on the tubes. http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?page=8

For ease of transport I would get an inflatable SUP. They weigh about 25# and the better ones are quite durable as far as rocks. You can carry it in a backpack and inflate it at the launch. You can get one for about $5-600. http://www.towerpaddleboards.com/Inflatable-Stand-Up-Paddle-Boards-p/bd-twr-bnc-6.htm You can strap a crate on and you are good to go.

As far as easy to transport SOT or SIK kayaks to meet your requirements you would be looking at a short plastic yak 10-12' or shorter. Lots of those out there.

once you paddle a kayak around your regular fishing grounds, you are not going to want to fish those areas from shore anymore.

I thought the one side of the Brisbane tubes was shore fish only?

Considering price, transportability, etc...keep an eye out for an Ocean Kayak Scrambler XT. You s/b able to find one for ~300 bucks w/seat & paddle. They're (comparably) light and easy to store. Plus they can take a beating. Only downside is that the tankwell is a weird shape so a regular milk crate doesn't fit unless you modify the crate.

Pack this into some of the deep Sierra lakes or around town.

Sailfish has a Malibu Explorer posted in the Classifieds for $350. That would be a perfect yak for this!

I agree with Sin - a Scrambler XT is an all around boat - you can do miles and fish the ocean on it, or you can carry it pretty easily and throw it down in small water.

Ultra light and small would be a 9' boat like a "Mainstream" Tropic - very light, small enough to bungie into any truck bed, cheap and capable - we used to fish these offshore before we discovered real kayaks...

Have fun - be safe!   :smt001
