Found this lake on google earth! Going to hit it on Sat. 8-17-13 with my 3 year old son. Does anyone have any advice on good areas or how to fish it? I figered ill throw cranks, jigs, plastics or whatever and ill have my son toss a worm over the edge:) I mainly would like him to catch some fish and i wouldnt mind getting a bass or two. Thanks for any tips!

Here is this weeks report from Western Outdoor News

Quote
CAMP FAR WEST - The lake is at 44-percent capacity. The bass fishing slowed and the catfish action picked up this past week. Catfish weighing 4 to 5 pounds were caught during the day and at night on anchovies, sardines, and chicken livers.

I chose this area with little knowledge on the fishing there. I live in carmichael, is there any other areas i might want to check out instead? My son really shows an interest in fishing and i would like him to have a good opportunity to catch something :smt003. I haven't lived here long so most the areas i explore are new to me.

If you are fishing from kayak, try Cameron Park Lake.  Just about can not miss catching fish there.  I recommend an evening fish trip with a young man that age.  Show up around 5pm and fish until he's ready for some dinner.  Stop at KFC or something along the way.

There's a 'hook up' report a couple weeks ago I went to and caught about a dozen bass in under 3 hours.  Rig a plastic worm in purple Texas rig style and float between the two bouy's over near the dam/far end of the lake.  The water is about 7 to 15 feet deep with drop offs.  Fish the bottom and let the lure drop off into the deeper holes.

Barbless hooks, catch and release, no live bait and $5 entry fee.

I have fished out at Camp Far West for about twenty years now (hard to believe it's been that long).  The lake is low but don't let that deter you.  If you are fishing from a kayak, fish the points and flats to the right of the north shore boat ramp with an 1/8 oz darthead and a plastic worm (something in green always works).  If you are in a boat, you may experience a little better luck fishing some of the steep rock walls in the bear river arm (same set up).  You can expect to catch fish (we caught twenty bass between sun up and 9 am last weekend), but don't expect many giants.  Also, if you are planning on an evening trip I would head elsewhere as the lake gets pretty packed on the weekends.

Thanks for the info. Had a great morning with the boy. We started at 6:30 and we were out by 10:00. Caught 5 trolling around the dam. Would of caught a lot more but its hard to fish with a three year old. largest was 16 inches and he reeled in his first one by himself which was 11 inches. The lake reminds me a lot like fishing Lake Shasta except the bass are a lot larger  :smt044. Really like the lake, wasnt to busy and plenty of action. Will definitely go again soon.
