Hey guys.  I'm going to be crabbing out of Monterey and while the pots soak, we were thinking about trying to go after some sand dabs.  I've only caught some by accident in the past so I'm not sure where to look.

We will be launching from Monterey Harbor and will be on a boat.  If anyone has any recent report or any advice as to what general area to give it a shot, it would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I read on some posts here before, seems like most of you guys are using sabiki rigs tipped with squid, is that correct?

Thanks in advance everyone.

The red can/buoy out in front of the aquarium is the standard spot but they often congregate slightly deeper this time of year like around 130'. I like to use at least a #6 sabiki and I often use a #4 if the bite is good. Only found em once but circle hook sabikis are money for the dabs because they tend to keep the hook in the mouth.

Good luck crabbing and if you do find the dungies let us know man!

Go straight out infront of the Hotel on Del Monte Beach in about 150 to 200 ft of water.  I caught a lot of them there while waiting for WSB to bite.  Sabiki w/ 6 hooks tipped with a little bit of squid.  I was catching 5 to 6 with every drop.  Filled up a small bucket in about 1/2 an hour.

Thanks for the info guys.  I'll be sure to report back on the dungies if we find em.

Post up a report. I'll probably be doing the same next week.

The ocean on the Monterey side been pretty gnarly the last couple days. Wouldn't be much fun in a yak. OR...it would be hella fun, depending on your disposition.

Not sure the squid strips are essential. Had good luck getting all the dabs I wanted out by the red buoy with just #4 and #6 sabikis couple of weeks ago. Can always add squid if its slow, but why bother if not needed? Personal preference, no doubt.

About how far out from the beach is the 150' depth?
