Sorry for the late reply, but I think if your fishing for trout with powerbait or eggs then you're best off using....http://www.sheltonproducts.com/sheltonrelease.html
I like using the TadPole too instead of split shoting if I'm fishing rocky or structured cover.

Just be SURE in either situation that it floats before you cast.
An old Ice House bank fisherman who always came back to camp with fish told me the same thing. The bait should float the hook off the bottom. His other secret was the spot.
