if it is not diving no matter how fast you're peddling, its probably not in the water at the right angle or has no tension on it.  you need to have tension on the shuttle hawk from the rear clip and it will start diving.  I've used one for about 3 years now, i really like it from the hobies, but i imagine from the paddle yaks its not nearly as easy, unless you have like a really light clicker or something.  I usually hold my reel with my left hand to keep tension, drop it off the right after clipping on to my downrigger and then just peddle..works well for me. I also did it while sailing and it worked very well also.

if anyone wants a demo i should probably be able to do one at berry if/when the salmon slam happens.

btw i use a little metal binder clip to keep mine on.  i lost one before but haven't in the last couple years. I also use the shuttle hawk off my b**t with its manual downriggers.  i like it better than the seps diver.  And yes, the stock clips suck.

and braid is no problem, i use braid on my downrigger and it dives just fine.  the tension is important, you can't just free spool it and expect it to dive, it won't.

Gary mentions about tension by using the clicker on your line counter reel (@18:00).

He also mentions about turning right, to speed down the SH, when the downrigger was on the left side.
