So obviously in order to dive, they need to be on a down plane... do they have any issues working with a diving lure?  Just wondering if the lure diving could pull the back end of the SH down and prevent it from diving to the set depth.

Not as long as there is more tension on the rod than being deliverd by the lure .If your were trying to run something with that much drag I would be more worried about keeping the line in the release.

Ah... good point.  I didn't think about that, but now that you mention it, it's pretty obvious.  Thanks for the info.

They work with any lure I have ever used, but just a suggestion change out the line clip to a small Scotty you will have better success.

Sorry if a little off topic, Im still not quite sure how this works. I have a Laketroller that I'm going to be trying for the first time soon and this seems like an excellent tool to use. Does this mean I dont have to keep bringing up the downrigger weight and dropping it? I want to use it for Kokanee fishing.  :smt001

Ive tried looking for pictures of how it is setup up but they just have images of the Shuttlehawk, not in in action  :smt009

Hey Steph, The shuttle Hawk has a groove in it. Your downrigger line goes into the groove. The shuttle hawk has a down rigger clip on it and once you put your line in it, it's made to slide down your down rigger cable to your weight. You can also add stops anywhere on your cable to keep it from going all the way to your downrigger ball. When a fish pops your clip the Hawk follows up your cable and floats on the surface. No need to crank up and down your downrigger. They work pretty slick. I know after my yesterday trip with my Lake troller I'll be getting one.  :smt002

I will try and do a mock setup this afternoon. And get some pics for ya.As fishjunky pointed out the stock release is junk and depending on where your dr is mounted you may want a longer release i'm running an 18" model from seps. I would recomend a seps or vances tackle release only because they have ajustable tension that scottys don't have.
Just know they can be a pita to get used to it takes a bit of practice to get it to dive.once you have that figured out there great. They do not float they only come back up if your moving.

Remember to practice safe knots, because big fish don't just break your line, they also break your heart.

Mike,
Did you add the rubber band as a retention device or do the new Shuttle Hawks come with it?
I have seen people attaching tethers to their SH to keep it from falling off the downrigger line.

I added the rubber band. From the the pics i've seen the newer ones may come with them. The newer ones also have a brass insert where the cable rides to prevent the plastic from wearing

This.... only more difficult from a paddle yak.I would imagine it would be easy if your pedaling. That dubro release they are using is junk imo.

That video shows the shuttlehawk diving right away. I tried getting mine to dive while peddling my Hobie & it would not dive no matter how fast I peddled. Anybody got any advice for me to make this thing work?

I have to get a good fast glide.i slack the line between my rod and the release.I grab my line just above the release and lift it strait up this way I can control the tension.once it starts to dive I let it take the slack let it go and she's gone.I also use the spool tension knob to adjust the tension for free spooling .If that makes sense

+1.   My impression is that to get that thing to dive you need to be going pretty fast... much faster than I usually troll for trout.  I think I got one from Seps too, thinking it was a better design.  Same deal.  Not sure what if anything i'm doing wrong.  Once down, if it ever goes down, i'm wondering how it will hold up to the line tension when I crank down on the reel.  Only think I can think of is i'm using braid for the DR line and maybe it's causing it to not dive?
