Great work. ChuckE, taking pictures, posting, and catching halibut, probably also using GPS and fishfinder.

I don't know how you guys do it! pretty overwhelming.

Nice butt ChuckE!!

How did landing that bad boy go on the Hobie? Did you have enough deck space etc?? I think you should rig up some kind of grinder in the peddles so when you get them boated you can just grind there head down  :smt003

Man, those conditions look nice compared to this past Sunday. I didn't realize that it's a three mile paddle to the end of the Berkeley pier. That's one long ass pier.

Good job fellas.

One of these days, just one, I'll catch a fish from the yak...

Bill, landing the butt wasn't much of a problem on the Adventure once I finally stuck the fish properly with the gaff.  The pedal drive in the center of the deck can actually help minimize the fish flopping around by pinning it to one side or the other.

However, after clubbing and bleeding that fish, it still kept coming back to life now and then... so I hog-tied that sucker with a rope and that was the end of that problem.

I think everyone and their mother was out on the bay yesterday.  I could barely stand to read Coastside this morning.  I had to turn it off. No love for bigeye in Berkeley. :smt009.  I didn't have a radio so I wasn't subjected to the chatter, but I did have to watch several power boats net fish right in front of me.  DOH!  I cant wait to put a shaft in some of those things.  Revenge will be mine soon.  I think I still have a lot to learn from you guys about fishing.

I have been thinking a lot about the possible reasons for my non catch day. I know fishing is not catching but maybe by posting my own ideas it will help the next guy to do it a little better.  I think I made several mistakes.  I went for an hour to several hours between checking my bait and set up and everytime I brought it up it was pretty muddy and weedy.  I should have checked it more frequently.  It was also hard to stay near the bottom without dragging my stuff while trolling because my speed would change dramatically with the wind, tide, and my own erratic paddling.  I used a 3 oz weight and should have probably gone a little heavier to have a more direct line down to the bottom for better control of the line.  I had to let a lot of line out to get it down to the bottom.  It seems that a lot of the trollers were using frozen herring because it stays together better on the troll while the drifters did better with live bait.  The stinger treble hook seems important too.  I hope that helps the next guy who gives it a try.  If anybody wants to chime in and add anything that would help, go ahead.

One thing is for sure, he will be more motivated to do so.  If I have to chase his yak down again :help: I'm gonna charge him :smt047 like the vessel assists boats do.  :laughing7:  JTF..

BigEye Dave,

As a relative newb myself, I think your analysis was a good one, and I thank you for posting that as a reminder to me!

I have heard that changing bait pretty often (at least every 15 minutes) is a good practice.
sometimes a bait doesn't smell right, isn't on the hook right, whatever, it's a way of risk-averaging. but at least check it.

if you keep pulling it up and it looks okay, you could start to leave it a bit longer, but best to check pretty frequenty at
the beginning at least.

As for the weight, I think that was less important, but a longer line is harder to check and re-deploy, also harder to feel
a strike and easier to foul. All in all, the logistics suggest a shorter line, but a longer line can get bit more sometimes?

I'll be on the Cpt. Hook tomorrow out of Emeryville for a potluck trip.  Maybe next weekend. I have to pick up new rodholder, install the FF and I just picked up a shimano crucial rod today. 7'11" single piece, my rockfish jigging rod.
So I should be ready for next weekend.
