It can become a hindrance to the overall experience at times, but it can also enhance it.

I think it is funny to see a bunch of guys on kayaks in the most beautiful setting staring at their monitors.  Don't we do enough of that during the work week? lol

I think it  is just another tool on the boat that can be used as a help or a hindrance...I personally LOVE having my Lorance at my fingertips..I feel blind without it..

if it has an air bladder, it will show up on the sonar; salmon (and a few other species) do not have air bladders and do not show up on a fishfinder or sonar.

like mentioned by others, i primarily use it to monitor my depth, temp and structure. knowing how to fully operate your unit is key; like changing the beam/cone width, changing from fresh to salt water, bottom zoom (great for finding Rockfishing structure), gain, etc.

I have spent many hours reading and playing with my electronics to figure out how to get the most use out of it.... now if I can only catch what I see on the screen.... :smt044

last weekend was the first time i fished without electronics, it was like playing darts in the dark!

As stated before the FF are great for depth/structure/ETC. Locating fish in shallow waters can be tricky based on the actual depth and transducer cone angle. Shallow water bottom coverage can be minimal so locating fish on the graph may indicate zero of them when in all actuality they are there just outside the trans cone area. <-- typical for rivers and lakes.

As far as Salmon it's been discussed numerous times, I have attached a link below along with a picture. Salmon do show up just fine on the FF's especially in Freshwater.

I think I am taking this (see above) and the earlier quote of "patience" out of this thread and taking both to heart..
Let me explain something to you. Um, I am not "Mr. Lebowski". You're Mr. Lebowski. I'm the Dude. So that's what you call me. You know, that or, uh, His Dudeness, or uh, Duder, or El Duderino if you're not into the whole brevity thing.

hmmm... didn't think they had a swim bladder.... interesting......... need to check the next salmon I catch....

Never seen a salmon show up on my ff/sounders, never; in fresh or salt.... even in the klamath when I could see them right under the boat.....

I debated this with numerous people and was convinced that salmon did not show up on the screen.... I may have to conduct my own tests .....

If it were true, then you wouldn't be able to see lings on the FF either.
Maybe the rumor goes back to if you just use the fish icons (instead of arches). Because then maybe it would recognize the small-bladdered fish as solid objects and therefore non-fish...?

I only view in "arch-mode", and I can see lings.... but never a salmon :smt009
