Sunday sounds good.  I think I'm more likely to do the early run out of Humboldt Bay.  You can always score a few rockies and a ling at the jetty too.

Crash, DrDave and anyone else, let's join Eric!

His plan is to launch from the South Spit parking lot (enter from Hookton Rd off 101) at 6:30am, 6:45 latest.  If you want to put in at the public launch on the North Spit, add 35-45 min paddle time to meet up.  I did that last weekend.  This Sunday, however, I will launch from the South Spit.  :smt001

Sunday forecast is 10-15 knots, so let's watch it close.  If Saturday's bite isn't hot and winds seem whippy I might skip it.  Otherwise, let's get em!   :smt001

Saturday: Variable winds less than 5 kt becoming NNW 5 to 8 kt in the afternoon. Areas of drizzle before 11am. Areas of fog before 11am. NW swell 4 ft. Wind waves around 1 ft.

Sunday: NNW wind 7 to 9 kt. Patchy fog before 11am. Mixed swell...NW 4 ft and WSW 1 ft. Wind waves around 1 ft.

King Salmon is another good launch point to save gas $$ its only an extra 10 minutes or less of paddling/peddling.  I am hitting the bar at the crack of dawn tomorrow if the wind isnt a problem.  Also it would be a good idea with the fog lately to add a flag or light to make yourself visable to the idiot power boat drivers.

here is the Trinidad forecast:

Friday Night: NNW wind 5 to 8 kt becoming variable and less than 5 kt in the evening. Areas of drizzle after 11pm. Areas of fog after 11pm. NW swell 4 ft at 8 seconds. Wind waves 1 to 2 ft.

Saturday: Variable winds less than 5 kt becoming NW 5 to 7 kt in the afternoon. Areas of drizzle before 11am. Areas of fog before 11am. NW swell 4 ft. Wind waves around 1 ft.

Saturday Night: NNW wind 7 to 9 kt. Patchy fog after 11pm. Mixed swell...NW 4 ft and SW 1 ft. Wind waves around 1 ft.

Sledge and I made it out 6+miles Tuesday .  I will post the report later....

I am going out now to pack it up so I can leave from work tomorrow. Sam the Man (13yrs old) is joining me. After some great conversation I believe he is all in and excited to catch his first saltwater fish. So I am thinking Saturday morning at Trinidad and if happening we would like to join the group in HBO, if you are good with that (I would understand if not). If HBO does not work out I am good for another day out of Trinidad on Sunday morning. I believe Sam will be able to paddle well, and the the handling of fish comes with experience and of course, I will assist.  :smt001 By the way is that south beach launch a wet and wild one?

Does anyone know what is the highest tide you would park on the Trinidad Beach... when your car tires start to get wet or close (saltwater does not like car brakes). The high tide is at 1:00ish each day and at 6.6-6.7. Should I park in the parking lot and wheel the boats down? :smt006

Park in the sand ...drop stuff off and go park in lot after...no need for the wheels fishing out of Trinidad. I love fishing up there now! Nice big rockies and other bottom fish! Saw a 35lb ling last time I was there! Have fun!!

Sounds great, Dave - I'm glad you're bringing Sam.  I'm not sure how high the tide is when it's hitting wheels, but 6.5' is pretty high.  As for the launch at the inner reach of the south jetty, it's a VERY easy launch with no surf.  It's the beach launch I do sometimes (on the opposite side of the spit) where it can get wet and wild.  See you soon.   :smt001

Hi eric you going out of hbo sunday? How far out? Wondering about sam.

Not sure, Dave, but it's a safe plan because the wind is in our faces as we exit the channel, and the tide will have turned and be headed in by the time we get just outside.  The swell is now low enough so that the bar should be very gentle, but that 10 to 20 knot wind forecast is not to my liking.  The dominant current is north to south and the wind and swell will follow suit in that direction, so getting out there early, heading NW toward the bite (it's about 2 miles out to the bite zone from the entrance and we will have paddled about 1.5 miles to get there), and heading back any time the wind might pick up is a very sound gameplan that I think Sam will do great with.  A total paddle of 8 to 10 miles translates to about 4 to 6 miles trolling, and the chances are really there for a salmon anywhere from the Jaws out to the heavier bite zone 2.5 miles NW.

Hope you guys are having a good morning in Trinidad.  I'll PM you my number so we can at least talk this afternoon and see what the forecast says at that point.   :smt001
