I don't do enough salt to justify investing in another reel, so Ryan... if you were to give one up, which would it be?  Which one would you keep in order to fill both needs as well as possible?

I actually don't have enough reels for all my rods. Those two rods share the same reel.

If I were to give up one it would be the sturgeon rod. I originally bought it to use from shore, but now doing the whole V balance thing from my kayak I could use just about anything for sturgeon with a good backbone.

You would not be able to use the sturgeon rod for jigging, a 4oz weight and it looks doubled over.

I use Medium-Heavy Tigers for sturgeon. You gotta have something with enough backbone to slam that hook home through the sturgeons leathery mouth. After sitting there for hours on end staring at your rod tip, you don't to blow your chance on a weak hook set. I've tried mediums and medium lights and I find both to not have enough backbone for the hookset. Keep in mind the weight your using as well.

I freaking love my Tiger!!! I decided to go with the medium light model so I can have fun fishing whether I'm targeting halibut, big lings or even rock fish. I run a Pen 320GT reel with 25lb test as my all around ocean rod.

Hope that helps.

I have the same rod and reel. Penn GTi, not the GT2. I really like the way it handles all the fish I catch in the ocean. I have used it for sturgeon too, but prefer the medium instead now.

I have both the Medium and Medium Heavy Ugly Stik Tiger rods.  Best choice is the Medium action.  It's good enough to cast an 8oz and best of all easier to detect them light sturgeon bite.

cool guys... I think I will stick with my gut and get the medium... sounds like the best "all around" deal.  By the way the reel is a Penn 321GTi lefty.

Good rods considering the cost. I wouldn't pay more than 60 bucks for a new one though.

I have a Med-Heavy rod. I wish I would have gone with the medium.
Its a great rod but a little to stiff for the rock fish and lings.
I'd say go with the Medium.
Good luck!

Yeah, pretty much 50-60 bucks no matter where you look.  I know there are far "better" rods out there, but for a good general purpose rod that is gonna get abused a bit... I don't know how you could go wrong with an Ugly Stik... I prefer to save there, and spend more on steelhead gear and the like.  Kinda funny actually... I have fished a bit recently with an old friend who isn't a "dedicated" fisherman, and he has reminded me of a very important lesson I learned years ago... DON"T SKIMP ON LINE.  Sure some rods may be more sensitive, some reels may have a better drag or retrieve ratio... put shitty line on the best terminal tackle in the world, and the whole rig turns into a worthless pile of crap.
