Fishing line selection

Hello again,

I'm going to put new line on two of my reels this week.  One is my RF/Halibut reel, Shimano TLD15.  The other is an older (gifted to me) Daiwa SG27LC (line counter) reel that I plan to use for salmon.  I was thinking 60# braid on both???   THe TLD has 20# mono now and I have no clue what is on that Daiwa.  Thinks for the advice in advance.

For rockfish and salmon trolling I use 40-50# braid. I like tuff line personally but a lot of guys use powerpro. Tuff line doesn't have the waxy coating. 65# braid if you are fishing YT or WSB near kelp. For downrigger salmon trolling I would use 30-40# mono. For halibut, WSB flyline and salmon mooching I use 20-25# invis x flouro. If you use braid for salmon, match it with a flexible moderate action rod.

If you're gonna troll salmon use a looooooong topshot and a light drag......unless there are furbags present, then just run spectra straight to 60lb leader with wide gapped hooks on a buttoned down drag and water ski them in. 

For a multipurpose reel, I'd go with 50 or 60lb braid (with 30lb mono on top). If it's going to be a salmon-specific reel, then maybe consider straight mono. Like Scott said, if using braid for salmon make sure to use a long/limber rod and a loose drag.

Guess I'm old school all my rods have P-line Mono with a P-line flouro leaders. In my experience a crows nest with braid is an absolute nightmare. I seem to have a knack for crows nests
