I usually use an egg weight and leader or a three way rig if I know the bottom is snaggy.
I am wondering if anyone rigs their minnows straight onto jig heads for SMBs? I've done it for other species and had it work well so I figure why not.

I never put the minnow straight to Jig heads it kills the purpose of using live bait, the best I had luck with is sliding sinker (egg sinker) 3ft of leader, or slip shots, it make the agent moves erratic..just my 2 cents

note~ use light wire hooks and light wgt. leader material.

Got a smallie with a minnow on the jig yesterday but the problems with using this method were very apparent to me. My kayak bobbing up an down from the boat wake was moving the bait around in a way that seemed unnatural to me, I also got a lot of snags when it would drag into structure. I think using the egg weight and leader let's the bait fish swim somewhat freely but on the jig it could only shake in one spot. I can think of a few situation where the jig setup would be in favor but I'm going to stick withe the traditional rig until that time comes.

Thanks for the info guys!

That's how lots of people fish for crappie...lip-hooked minnow on a 1/16oz jighead. I think there's a time & place for it. Like casting toward submerged bushes in the back of a cove.
