I like the features of the Abu Revo Toro, Level Wind, Clicker, Line Capacity, the fact that a lot of my kayak fishing heroes use them, ect.. But I reel left handed and they stopped making lefty's. Buying used reels isn't really my thing, people's definition of what "good condition" is varies greatly. So, here's my questions. What's a comparable reel to the Revo? Anyone got a Revo Lefty that they are considering selling? Should I take my chances on a refurbished reel off of eBay? As always, thanks for the help and guidance guys. I really appreciate it.

Jeff

PS. Are high speed reels necessary? What's the need?

I am glad I went with my Curado 300e and is similar to the Revo 50.  3 years old and still going strong.  I just had it serviced at Alan Tani's reel clinic and its better than new  :smt109 .  Shimano offers the Curado 300eJ with a power handle.  A few days ago I ordered the power handle to give it more uummph.
I also own a Curado 200e that competes with the Revo Inshore.  Sweet piece of equipment.
Its pretty obviuos I am a Shimano fan. I seem to get the best deals at eBay.

Ohhh man.......all I will say is don't get caught up in the hype, especially after all the okuma badairka and now revo threads that are popping up.  Everyone has different needs, demands and expectations of their gear....buy what suits you.

Whats your price range, what rod will you be pairing it to, how do you intend on fishing it?

The corrsion non-resistance of the Abu Revo's is concerning.  Longevity is a big concern.  A low profile reel that is easy to cast is at the top of the list, as well as having a clicker on board.  Ideally, having a reel that could pull double duty in the salt for rockies, Halibut, WSB and Salmon, then get put on a bass rod for the Delta would be awesome.  For salt, I'd like to put it on a Shimano Trevala, for Freshwater, I like the Shimano Clarus.  Yes, I am a Shimano fan.

Jeff you won't like this but I say you need two reels. I too like low profile reels. But for Salmon, WSB, rockies and Butts you hardly cast (jigging, mooching and trolling). I use my abu 6500. You can buy new (they make a lefty) for $100

then go get a Abu low profile bass reel you can use for stripers and LM. I got this one and have even used it for shallow water RF (Santa Cruz). You can prob use this one for butt as well. With braid you will have good line capacity.

Thats cool with me, I'm just trying to see if there is something comparable to the Revo.  I like that it can handle our usual fish, and cast.  I'd like to be able to cast a swimbait away from my yak.  I've been using my Penn 501, which is great, but I cant cast it for $hit.  Something that can cast, that is low profile such as the Toro, I figure could be used for delta stripers and bass as well as ocean fish.  Gotta be a Lefty though...

My 2cents, I fished a revo inshore and avet sx almost equally over the past 2-3 years. Complete tear downs once a year. Result, avet is on the shelf needing bearings, inshore is still nice and smooth. Outside plastic is showing some wear on the inshore but internals have held up well. Both reels had extra grease/corrosionX added to protect the internals originally. Like how the inshore casts big swimbaits in the delta too. At first it felt strange because it's so small to be out on the ocean but I got over that once I saw how the drag performed on decent sized stripers.

Picked up a used Pluton for a killer price which is my current favorite rockfish and giant swimbait tossing reel. Need more time with it to determine durability but it seems built like a tank, super smooth and came with greased drag washers. Much heavier than the inshore though. All that said, don't think you can go wrong with a curado.
