Hi everyone,

First time posting. My family is going on a 10-day trip to Tahoe and we are interested in renting at least 1, maybe 2 tandem Hobies for the duration of the trip. We are driving up from Los Angeles and am wondering if anyone has recommendations on (a) where to rent them from (b) what equipment to buy to mount on roof (or trailer?) and (c) how much would you pay? For 10-days thus far we have been quoted 500$ but that was just for 1 2010 Outfitter.

Thanks,
Dave

I know there's a place in South Lake Tahoe that rents Hobies, because I've seen their craigslist posts for used Hobies in the past. But that's just once you get to Tahoe. Another option maybe is to check and see if other lakes/spots along the way rent Hobies too (they rent em at Lake del Valle in the East Bay, for example). Where are you planning to fish?

If you are just going to use them on Lake Tahoe just rent them up there.  Do they have to be Hobies?, do they have to be tandems?  Save money and hassle- rent there.  Some of the rental places even deliver to the launch point for you.  Do a web-search for rentals at the South Shore and I think you will find what you need.  That's a long drive from LA (I used to do it almost every summer).  Good luck!

For those prices you could just buy a canoe and be money ahead. At least you would have something to keep at the end of the trip. For freshwater use a canoe is pretty nice and will fit more people/stuff than most kayaks will.
