The 12-30lb model would be more appropriate drift fishing.

tiger ugly stix are great beginner rods , not that expensive and will last forever

for halibut/stripers ide go with a 2201-7 medium light paired with a penn jigmaster , it would work for rockfish too but i like a bit more stiffness when i dropping heavy weights down deep   << my first ocean rig , still holding strong , caught stripers , halibut and a grip of sturgeon on that rig.

For halibut and striper live bait drift rigging, I will use Shimano TR 100G and a TR 200G reels w/8 foot Shimano rods (Triton Extra Heavy and Triton Down Rigger). 15-20# mono.

You can get those reels for about $70 bucks at Fishermans Warehouse. They are the newer version of the popular Shimano Triton Speedmaster. I use those same set ups for king salmon mooching as well. Never had any problems and they work very well.

8 foot rods might be a little long for kayak fishing but I have to deal with a 16 foot yak w/outriggers.

mendohead - I have a somewhat similar set-up to yours that I will try for kayak rockfish/ling/maybe WSB. I bought it mainly for albacore, but I have a Calstar  GFGR700L rod and a Shimano TLD-15.

Thanks for all of the advice, I really appreciate it. After looking around and learning from all of you, my first rod is a Ugly Stick Tiger 7 ft. medium light, 12 to 30 lb line. The reel that came with it is  Shakespeare Arsenal bait caster. Got it for $79.00.
I also bought a standard Horizon XT290 and because I spent over $100 dollars I got another$ 20 off. Walked out of West Marine only spending $179.89 plus uncle sam. All I need to do now is catch some fish to make my honey happy.
