Except the Deep 6's I bought have WAY less weight.  According to the package the 0 goes 100 feet and the 1 up to 120 feet, yet they both have considerably less weight than yours.  What model is that you use?

The "Double" is a no. 2 and the beat-looking silver/green one is a no. 1

I agree with Z on the yak-effects on the DeepSix, but it's tricky.  If you stop paddling your tackle will fall deeper, but if you paddle along slowly the planer won't work as well and your tackle will come up higher in the water column...  it's confusing, until you hookup!   :smt003

Etienne's trig, Cal or no, doesn't make sense to me.  30 degrees is a third of 90 degrees (straight out from the rod tip), so that would be 1/3 the drop per the length of the pull, wouldn't it?  We'll have to sketch that one out in the ashes of the firepit over a few brews, sackyak!   :smt002

Exactement! Just like Ab said it's a general depth thing so if you're gonna go w/ them then don't try to get scientific about it all and just troll it like the AbMan. Obviously IT WORKS!!
“Chi va piano va sano e lontano” (roughly: he who goes slow goes healthily and a long way)

It's on for the biggest Chinook this year Abbie!! Bring it on! :smt066

The main problem I encounted when trolling from a kayak with this type of setup is that you have to maintain forward-motion as you let out line. Because the setup will get all tangled if you are stationary and just let out a bunch of line. Due to the fact that different components of this rig will sink at different rates; the chovie will end up wrapped around your main line.
So you have to kinda paddle really hard to a glide, then let out some line...paddle hard to a glide, then let out some more line...

Or do you guys just slowly let out line (like, via the pull method instead of freespooling out line) while stationary/drifting, and then begin paddling..?

And I'm sure this is a question I could just ask you directly but thought it might help others in the future who use the Search function.
Thanks!!!

Yep. 5 Paddles, 7 line pulls grab the paddle and repeat. I do the same w/ my downrigger. 5 paddles, 10 cranks on the DR and repeat. Just the name of the trolling game on a Yak.

Yep x 2.  I usually do increments of 6 pulls.  You barely have to be moving to use the "pulls" method.  PK is right that free-spooling your gear down will result in a mess that isn't fishing effectively or at all.

Man oh man, we'll be loving it if the fish are there and only less than 20 pulls...  I'm getting too excited.   :smt003

hey abking, im not sure on the exact depth, but as logical as your angle theory sounds, it isnt right... with what your saying, 30 is a third of ninety so 12/3=4", then 45 is half of ninety, so 12/2=6"... If the line angle is 45 degrees, you could draw a line on the surface with a perpendicular line down to your actual line... at that point your fishing line becomes the hypotenuse of the triangle you just drew... to find the length of a hypotenuse is the square root of the sum of the length of the sides squared.. or AA+BB=CC.  One pull is 12" so AA+BB=(12*12) or 144... with the hypotenuse at 45 degrees the two sides are of equal length, so divide 144/2=72... the square root of 72 becomes the length of the vertical line (your depth) or about 8.5"... without a calculator I cant figure a 30 degree downplane, but it will be deeper than 4"... closer to 6" like the other guy said.... ouuuuuch... my brain hurts

sorry about gettin all smarty pants on ya, but this is fishing, and depth is important stuff... just dont want ya goin off all half cocked!

I wish i had a scanner... think of all the typing that would have saved me!
good news: yep.. you can get down deeper than you thought, of course i have no idea what the line does underwater... the drag must bend it.... I figure it probably gets more vertical as it gets toward the terminal end... less line drag than it the middle of the drop?  but really I have no real proof of that.

Uh, yeah, drag...  that's what I was factoring in before!   :smt002

Seriously though, it probably is about what I'd originally figured since there's drag - but, no, that's not how I was figuring it!   :smt001

I guess if I had one of them fancy fish-finder deals I might be able to see my rig down there...

Thanks loads for all the great pics and explanations of gear, Eric and everyone.
Sure saved us a lot of time and questions at the gear store here at Noyo.
Will try this in Fort Bragg/Mendocino one of these days. :smt007  -Matt
