A mudslide took out 40 feet of Highway 1 between the Bixby Bridge and Palo Colorado Wednesday, prompting the long-term closure of the road, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The washout occurred just before 6 p.m., prompting the closure of northbound traffic at Bixby Bridge and southbound traffic at Palo Colorado, the CHP said.

No alternative routes are available, but Caltrans is looking at the feasibility of using a private road in the vicinity, the CHP said.

The closure will "potentially last several days if not longer," the CHP reported. The 40-foot section was completely washed away.

sucks for us as fishermen, but sucks even more for those businesses down there that depend on tourist dollars. :(

Well at least a local pirate will have the area all to himself. I think Caltrans needs to investigate sabatoge!

Well, dude wasn't/isn't a Sur local but whatever, investigation pending. :~)

That exact same spot had washout problems back in the last el nino in 98. If you look @ the pics, you'll see the relatively-new retaining wall/structure that was built to prevent this from happening again. And that's what worries me...they'll probably take their sweetass time rebuilding this section because the last fix didn't work, obviously. So I wouldn't be surprised if this is still being "fixed" come May when RF season opens. But...there's no way they can make locals detour all the f' around hwy 46 = that's crazy, especially since it'd be quicker to take Nacimiento Rd over the hill & through Ft Hunter-Liggett to the 101. But I suspect they'll detour the traffic around that section of hwy 1 by using a couple private roads that criss-cross the coastal terrace.

They had better do something.  Otherwise, that's one helluva far paddle from Bixby to the spot.  That might even be too far for Great Bass 2.   :smt044

OK, now I have reason to believe they'll fix it before RF season opens...because the Big Sur Int Marathon is on May 1st! And that's big business, so I hope they'll get'r done quick.
