went out alone this morning on the inflatable and my first stop was lovers point, right at the line where the reserve starts / ends. i knew the vis was clear as gin but had to confirm it myself so i jumped in and started looking around. i was able to make out sand patches between reefs from the boat and i anchored up at 60 feet.

got a few nice size olives, largest being 21 " there and saw something really weird, i saw 3 ling cod going up and down the water column with rockfish schooling up behind them. olives and blues. they were not eating but just diving up and down. the rockfish followed suit behind probably because this was their safest place to be. these lings were about legal if even. not huge.

that spot was good, always good for nice olives and an occasional sheephead or calico.

then i hopped back on an motored to lovers cove, anchored at 45 feet and started working outwards into deeper water. collected some shells to bring home for my daughter and as i looked for small abalone shells i saw a big head staring back at me from inside a cave. i went up and got the speargun and headed back down to meet up with the resident cabezon who was coincidentally the same length as my largest olive. total for the day was 5 olives and one cabezon. vis here at outer otters was also really good today. i was in the water by 6.30 am and dived til 9.00 am and headed back in to head home. i got cold.

breakwater ramp bathrooms have 50 cent hot showers which i could not pass up today!

its nice out there, i bet it will be nice unless the wind whips up again. one of the local night fishermen there said 2 weeks ago they were getting halibut off the wall at the wharf but i could not muster up heat and energy to go out and look for them even though it was close to the ramp.

this was my first day diving off the inflatable and it was probably the easiest way to get out and play and be back in time to get home for lunch. you can carry a lot and you can cover a lot of area fast but the drawback is the launching / towing as always.

good times to be had. good luck.

john

Awesome.

Glad you got out there and had great conditions. I was in the same area last Friday and the vis was 6 foot max.  :smt012

Once my back is feeling better I will be back out there for sure.

If you ever want a partner on that inflatable, just let me know!!

Congrats on a great day in the water, and thanks for sharing!

sorry guys, i meant the wall by the monterey bay fish company on the pier by MBK and not the breakwater wall.

(the wall where people fish anchovies from)

i should have been clearer: )

yes conditions are good and i hope they stay this way a while as the winter diving is usually the best for the monterey area. i noticed also a lot of jellyfish as well so maybe a sign that the water is warming up a bit?

jim, i will let you know if i get a chance to get out on the inflatable again, today i actually had no plans and got lucky a break from work and just no errands to do!

Well written report. Thanks for the details - must have been a thrill to see that Cabbie's head in the hole and then getting him! Nice olive too!
