WSB - HELP OUT WITH THIS

Had Travis Tanaka with me Sunday, he is a biologist with DFG here in Monterey. ( Yeah, yeah I know, and I give him plenty of shit about the dept too ) Anyway weve fished together many years and he took the heads from our fish Sunday to work, scanned them and sure as shit one had a pin in it. So he will send it down south for evaluation. He wanted to let you guys know that you can call him and he will scan your WSB heads and that way if they dont have a pin those who want can keep the heads. I for one am really interested on a track record of these fish here and I think this is well worth the effort. It would be easy for all us local guys to hook up with him. He did tell me he is also going to be around the docks a few days a week. It's not to much effort to do this at all guys. He can be reached at Monterey DFG - 831- 649- 2881

Followed by a post from the biologist, Travis:

Actually my office phone number is 831-649-2881. You can also email me at [email protected] We have a spam filter in place which may prevent some emails from getting through. I return all calls and emails, so if you don't hear from me, I didn't get the message.

I have a wand which detects metal in the head. Heads that beep get sent to Hubbs. I also am collecting head measurements.

If you have heads, call or email to set up a time I can meet you. DO NOT drop off heads at the office, the front office staff won't know what to do with them.

Excellent, thanks Sharky.

From what I've read; SF Bay had a short lived experimental wsb pen system like they have in SD.  I think the DFG is interested in finding out if the wsb we're catching now are SoCal fish or spawn of the SF Pen fish.

Save them heads folks.

i was wondering about these WSB myself. seems like the bite and population is much stronger than a normal year, so i was wondering if our local population was being supplemented by hubbs fish.

i don't remember hearing about anyone up here having a WSB hatchery any more, although i would certainly appreciate it.  the Hubbs fish have made WSB fishing down in socal better the last few years for sure.

It would be cool if they did have multiple pens threw Central Cal and Northern cal.
But as we our seeing here they may just migrate out if there FOOD is not around.
We have had alot more squid this year then down south has been getting.
Kinda weird.

Just a heads up on this project. The DFG Finfish project has been scanning wsb when people return to port and so far 0 of the 500+ fish have had chips. The one fish mentioned above actually had a hook or something embedded in its gullet that was causing the scanner/detector to go off. So it sounds like these wsb are natural spawners. Not sure if that's good or bad, in terms of establishing a hatchery program in Cen/Nor Cal?
