I'm beat.  So much paddling.  So much determination.  Such a slow bite today!   :smt005

I got down there with two bags of chovies and got on the water at 9:30, determined to salmon fish all day.  I succeeded in that at least - never put a jig or fly down today.  I fished all chove - trolled probably 6-7 miles or more, and drifted and mooched too.  The fog was very thick, and that's where it's nice to know your home turf.  I paddled right out, around the corner and out to 130' of water northwest of the whistle trolling.  Lots of marks inside, but it's hard to fish that kelp.  Word is the fish are in there stuffing themselves on juvenile rockies...  I pulled up the troll outside the Whistle and dropped a hard-tied double hook down for the mooch.  Picked up a sand dab (AOTY upgrade!   :smt003) and then a nice 19" verm.  I thought I'd get into a lingcod doing that, but not today.  The radio had a few fish caught, but that was about it for the day - even the commercial guys only had one or two apiece.  I came back inside and picked up a fat greenie on the troll - 16.25".  I shamelessly drifted him over a couple of reefs in hopes of lingzilla, but no luck.  Saw and spent a little time with Boogieman - his new ride is slick!  He was having about the same luck as me, but we were both glad to be on a nice ocean.  It was a little bumpy with a persistent breeze and drift from the southeast, but very do-able.  I bailed around 5PM, filleted my fish and got home a little late for dinner.  I'm lucky to have a family that tolerates me, but it's true that my WAF is about zilch right now.

Sitting out there in thick fog outside the Whistle in black water I took some time to remind myself that I've become very very comfortable being alone out on the ocean.  I'll keep working on that...   :smt001

thx for sharing and the pics.  Must have been great therapy.  Even I feel better as I read the report and saw pictures while sitting in front of my PC.

Good stuff as always Eric! My dad just reminded me that RF season ended @ the Cove on the 15th...crap! And salmon season ends on Sept 6th! DoubleCrap! (but they did get a few nice salmon in the past coupla weeks) I was hoping to get back up there in Sept, but it'll have to be a kayak Calbutt & ab mission now. Unless we splash the boat, then it c/b a Pacbutt & RF trip to Gorda...or possible albie run (fingers crossed!).

Keep in touch about it, PK - you could possibly caravan up from the Cove with Boogie and Prophet for a Cape run if we get the right forecast.
