I've gone to the guy who parks his VW van outside of New Leaf on the westside of Santa Cruz. He's got a sweet setup with two electric wheels with stands, all modular to fit into his van. It was $4 a blade last time I had him do all my Henkels kitchen knives.
I've been using a steel for touchups.

Thanks for the heads up on this. I was about to ask about SC options.

In case you're interested, Sur la Table will sharpen 2 knives for free now through April 30.

I like to sharpen at home on a stone, freehand.  Works great for me.  If I had a $500 handmade knife or a very nice Japanese knife or something I would worry more about precise honing angles and such, but... meh.

I think the guy in the van in the Santa Cruz area has some on-off schedule of appearances at the local farmers markets-maybe the Certified Farmers Market website, if any,has his schedule.
All the VW vans in the world, working or not, are in Santa Cruz.

I started counting how many knifes I had that needed sharpening and quickly decided that it would be cheaper to buy a Chef's Choice sharpener.  Got the 120 model on Amazon for about $130 shipped, and over 15 knives later I couldn't be happier w/ the decision.  :smt004

Hi Yakers:

I use the "Accusharp Knife and Tool Sharpener" . I picked it up at Fishermans' Wharehouse for $10.0

Here is the guy I use. http://www.saucyjoe.com/

I usually track him down at the Alemany Farmer's Market on Saturday's, but he's got a calendar with days places and times on his website. He's done a great job on my knoves, and I just use a little steel between major sharpenings.

I got mine online. I've never seen one in the stores.
The fishing was so good I thought I was there yesterday!

I've only had 2 knives sharpened(both hard use fishing blades), but from my limited experience, I would recommend in the area.
